Yourdon website-- having trouble accessing it

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Is there a technical difficulty at the Yourden website? When I've tried to access it this weekend I get a 'directory listing denied" message, followed by "This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed." Anyone?

There's another thread regarding this issue:

...don't know why some of you are having trouble connecting to my site; I'm going to be moving to a new ISP in another week or so, and maybe that will help clear things up.

Folks,

I was on the road for a couple of days, and didn't see this thread until this morning. I just accessed my site, using Netscape 4.61, with no problems.

It's quite possible that the problems are intermittent glitches suffered by the server and/or ISP; in any case, I haven't done anything to cause the kind of bizarre error messages some of you seem to be getting.

Since 1995, my web site has been hosted by PrimeHost, which is a subsidiary of AOL. Though I have not been notified directly by AOL or PrimeHost, it appears that AOL has decided to sell PrimeHost to some other vendor. In the best of all worlds, this should be "transparent" to customers like me, and indirectly to visitors like you. But it's quite possible, of course, that they're encountering some technical difficulties (or "teething problems," as the Manchester airport people said about their Y2K problems).

Anyway, I'm using all of this as an opportunity to shift to a different ISP in California whose rates are about four times cheaper. This involves sending various forms and requests to InterNIC, which I'm in the midst of right now. Again, all of this should be "transparent," but I'll be on the lookout for problems. The shift has not yet taken place, so whatever problems people are experiencing now are presumably associated with the old or new owners of PrimeHost.

Ed:

As of 3:15pm CDT today (Sunday), I'm still receiving the message as described above. Tried it in both IE (5.0) and Netscape (4.6)

This message typically appears when there is no <default-homepage- filename> in the default directory (i.e default.htm, index.html, efault.asp, etc). Because you can see the site, it may be something else.

For some reason "http://www.yourdon.com" is not mapping to the default home page. The most likely causes are either that the default home page file does not exist or because the path to the default home page is not correct.

Some things to check:

1. That the DNS is correct. I see "www.yourdon.com"=209.233.242.223 (a SiteServer IP)

2. That the web server is pointed to the correct directory on the server.

3. That there is no file such as "default.BAK" or "defalut.SAV" or "index.BAK" also in the home directory. On some web servers, this will cause a problem. This used to cause me problems with O'Reilly's WebSite.

4. Make sure that the default homepage filename (e.g. default.htm, default.asp, etc.) is correct on the server.
