Human Nature Default.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'd talked about this long ago, on another board. when the end of the year comes, when people are forced to either prepare for y2k or take their chances, what will happen?

human nature says there will be hoarding and panic. i.e.- if someone is in a store and they are on the fence about y2k, and they see people grabbing up all the supplies they can, what is that person going to do? RIGHT-- start grabbin supplies too....

same with stock market. remember, many investors are older, and while they might realize it's wise to invest for the long term, Who says they can wait that long? are they willing to risk their investments when they're getting older and older? can they(will they) be content to wait for the stock market to go back up? or will it be "i'm getting mine before you can get yours"???

there is too much uncertainty about y2k for the market to just keep soaring around about december.(and actually the last couple of days, it hasn't been soaring at all)

remember that thread about what if someone accidentally runs into a pole, knocks out power, & people blame it on y2k and panic? how likely is that with COUNTLESS drunk people on the road. I know others like me who don't even DRINK, and we're planning on drinking for this celebration.

oh, did i mention hackers releasing viruses? oh yeah, and those opportunistic theives that know police will be spread thin and only the most dire situations will recieve attention?

oh yes, the human problem is very big here, and that's ON TOP OF, the code.....

everything in this post is typical human nature. will somebody die from y2k? I have no doubt in my mind that at least 1 person will, directly or indirectly.

ya betta prepare......spin doesn't mean sh*t when you've got 4 hungry mouths to feed and you see the last cans of food being taken off the shelf... so don't expect the government (who worked on the problem (ss) for the last 10 years without saying a word to you until last year) to save you.

ya feel me?

Prepared People don't Panic. Period.

I'm sorry but I forgot who it was that posted a statistic that described food production in this country. For everyone to have 2 weeks of food in Jan, we have to ramp up production 15% NOW. If we wait til Oct, " " " " " " 25%. Some people will not have food next year.
