How much do you have to hear?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

How much bad news do you have to hear for you to understand that Y2K is going to be more than a Bump in the Road?

And how much MORE do you have to hear for you to prepare for it?

In the last week The President Just signed a Bill limiting lawsuits against companies that are Y2K related. (After he said he'd veto it)

Friday the 23rd - The DOD reported in a survey that half of 161? countries were either behind in their remediation or were at serious risk of failures.

And that was just this week.

How much do you have to hear, before you prepare?

MCFLY! MCFLY! IS ANYBODY HOME?

Where's the proof? We're at the end of July and nothing major has happened yet. Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.

Yes deafandblind....you are. Apparently you don't read either. If I could hotlink, I'd fill this thread with blue ink! If you aren't going to take advantage of having access to the reported failures, recently developed and extensive contingency plans, government reports, failed tests, numerous gliches, concerned public officials 's comments, reports of those caught in lies, misrepresentation of facts and data, just to name a few.......then perhaps you are wasting your time on this forum, please do not waste ours, if I may be so bold as to request this of you.

Deaf,

I can't tell if you are being sincere or sarcastic. By looking at the handle you chose, it seems that you may be leaning towards sarcasm, but for now (and since some do think the way such as you are presenting yourself) I'll assume you're sincere.

It's not necessarily a matter of proof. I would think that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to prove the future. Even if we were having multitudes of failure after failure now, it would not mean that next year would be more than a bump in the road.

The simple fact is that there is a problem. Hopefully it will be taken care of in time. The real question is do you have the faith and trust in those trying to fix the problem to do an adequate job? Are you willing to bet your life or your loved one's lives on it? The decision you make is one that you will have to live with.

I can live with being wrong about the need to prepare. It would be very difficult to live with it if I should've prepared but didn't. For me, it is so simple to see the right thing to do.

In my opinion, anyone waiting on proof is only asking for trouble. The day that there is solid "proof" that the new year will result in the "doomer" scenario, will be the day that scenario begins. The game will be over and all those waiting on "proof" will have lost.

The ultimate proof lies at the end of this year. Unfortunately, if you, or anyone else, are waiting on that, it may very well be to late to do any good.

deafandblind,

Gee, did I sleep late again? Maybe I missed the last five and a half months of my life, or maybe IT AIN'T Y2K YET!

Do yourself a favor. Don't get me started on this 1999 failures BS. It's like comparing a mouse to an elephant! (you do know that a mouse scares the shit out of an elephant, don't you?)

You want proof? How about the world spending $1,000,000,000,000.00 in an ATTEMPT to fix the problem? How about Congress passing a law to protect the tech companies, like IBM and Microsoft from Y2K related suites?

Like I said, don't get me started. It's late, and I gotta crash.

Have a nice weekend, deafandblind. I'll be here. <:)=

Sheeze, my line in the sand was crossed in early April 98 with the release of the G8 press release with y2k being the very last, very short paragraph out of all the other "important" topics they considered.

The Greek tragedy continues to unfold, complete with actors, chorus, antiphonal chorus, & audience - all mesmerized, with Pan waiting, offstage.

I think deafandblind HAD to be sarcastic. NOBODY is that stupid.

Sure there are, several of them inflict this forum, and some of the same and a slew of others infest csy2k. But I too thought deafandblind was being sarcastic.

It's now only a question of whether Y2K ever mattered or not. We did not fix it. The rest of the world certainly did not fix it.

It's not a question of whether we will fix it or not. That question has been answered to anybody who isn't a dumshit.

NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN

Are you simpletons or what? All the dates that were supposed to crash the computers never did. Large compaines will not allow this to happen. The banks are compliant and the utilities have several months yet to work on it. Airlines are ready. Nothing to worry about.

-- Not Stockpiling (It'sFixed@youMorons.com), July 24, 1999.

I was being sarcastic. I'm taking Y2K very seriously, however, there's another side of me that is hoping we all haven't been fed a line of bull. It's very difficult for any of us to understand or believe an accurate assessment of the problem. I have no way of confirming anything, and I believe that is why people are not doing anything to prepare. They are cynical about the news media and really don't give a rats ass, they'll only care when it's too late. People truly are deaf and blind.
