O T. How many Africian Americans are aware of the potential impact of Y2K problems? I have heard virtually nothing on this subject from the Black leaders such as Colin Powell, Charles Rangle, Major Owens, Jesse Jackson etc. Don't they realize

that their constituants live in the big cities and are the most likely to suffer from the loss of sever, water, electricity and Federal checks? Do any minorities read this forum? If only one per cent of the white folks get it, it would appear that far less of the other groups get it. They apparently don't realize that their liberal senators and representatives have literally sold them down the river by setting up these huge Federal programs to help them without making sure that they will not crash due to computer problems. The rage of the unsuspecting will make these areas dangerous in less than 6 months (Watts, Liberty City, St. Petersburg, New York City and numerous other places where problems have occurred.) Was this a deliberate effort to hurt these groups?

Assuming your theory is correct, I would suspect for the same reasons that other perceived leaders are behaving in the same manner.

From the "Poll Info." thread below:

"The poll of 1,008 adults, conducted for the AP by ICR of Media, Pa., found that women (38 percent) were much more likely than men (23 percent) to stock up on supplies. In addition, 42 percent of blacks planned to take precautions, compared with 29 percent of all others."

TONY BROWN is a black leader who get it. I haven't seen his program on PBS lately.

Just search tony brown on the web.

The bill of goods sold to minorities has been total and complete I'm sorry to say.

I don't think Y2K is a racial thing. I participated in a black family Internet day a while ago (no, I'm not black). I found that the level of intelligent thought among the attendees at the function and the willingness to at least give Y2K a good listen was at least as high or higher than at other events I've participated in.

Lately, I have been re-evaluating my definition of intelligence. And, no, I don't think anyone is deliberately trying to hurt "these groups". What has happened to them is an example of a dysfunctional system and the "help" has not been help at all, it's enabling and it hurts poor people regardless of their race.

There is no leadership in the *human* race! I've written letters about Y2K and contacted "leaders" of a variety of races and the reception is always the same. The lights are off and nobody's home.

Let's change the rules and hold these "leaders" accountable after the fact. Let's make them join the ranks of the unemployed.

When I mentioned intelligence, I was speaking about the people who have crossed my path that I thought were intelligent. Most of them don't even give Y2K a second (or first) thought. I *used* to think they were intelligent!

if everyone would just prepare as if a large snowstorm was on the way, it would be better than nothing. Supplies such as food, water, batteries, candles, paper products and blankets, car full of gas, and propane for your grills would see you thru at least a week. maybe that would be sufficient so people wouldn't panic.

I would guess that black folks are WAY more open than whites to the idea that the government is lying to them. I've heard that a large percentage of blacks seriously believe that AIDS was a deliberate plot to destroy them. After the Tuskegee thing, you can't blame them for being suspicious. My guess is that blacks would "get" y2k much quicker than whites if -- IF -- they were given accurate information.

But what do I know...

And, I might add, for those living in large cities like Detroit, as well as other communities who depend on these huge water plants--some of which are too large for generators--storing water might be a very good idea. (I get my water from Detroit. I "got it" with regard to potential water problems a long time ago.)

The prep forum is full of good ideas for this.

Link for newbies, please?

Yes, I'm sure minorities read this forum. I do. Not all minorities live in a "just minority" area. Most non-minorities in my sub-division DGI and don't want to hear about it...and are the majority.

Quietly...go figure

Minorities know about y2k through alot of rappers sending them the message. Better listen to Busta.

It has been my experience that Blacks pick up real fast on the "Do as I say, not do as I do" thing. While we sit on this forum noticeing that government is preparing but urging us not to, and wonder about why they do not tell the people more, blacks (based on those I have gotten to know really well) tend to 'get it' like this...Look, computers are everywhere, there is not too much time to January, soooo lets look at The Man...what's HE doin...Wait, he has food stockpiled at the Whitehouse, months worth...what is this jive about a 3 day storm???...money supposed to be safe in banks, yet the Man is printing up $50 Billion extra...what is this jive about keeping a bank statement and not cash???...I can't feed my family with bank statements...the MAN is trainin' the Marines to go door to door...what is this jive about there being NO trouble in January???..and finally...people who stock up to feed their wife and little ones are the problem ant to blame...what kind of jive is THAT??I thought it is called Y2K Computer problem because it's the Computers, not some folks shopping for groceries!!!

See, it reduces all the Kosky bullsh*t real fast. I guess it helps that they can stand to the side of Caucasian America to get perspective. Never forget, blacks have had much experience in being 'spun' (defrauded) by those in power, and those same people on power cover their butts and blame someone else.

Can't say how widespread the REAL knowledge is but i GI'ed instantly. Someone sent a brochure on the subject to the house and as soon as i read it, the lights went on. After spoon feeding my mom and sister, they both are doing at least the 3 days preps and my brother who works for the mouse in florida was already well on his way when i contacted him...disney has alerted its employees as the entire system is computerized. We all live in different locals...mom & brother in big cities, sister in medium city, and i'm in the sticks so the preps are quite different. I do the research and pass on the info as it applies to each. All have been invited to retreat to the country if things really go past the 3 day storm crap. I also plan to give a prep talk at our family reunion so that other family members that may not have GI'ed will at least have what i feel is that lastest info to make their own choices. There doesn't seem to be as big a problem making believers out of most because there is a built in distrust of anything the government says anyway and it is my belief that whatever time frame they are spitting out is never going to be anywhere close to what they need to be saying. Sooooo keep on with the preps as your own finances allow until rollover!!! (by the way, we are a family of black, white, and indian heritage.)

-- kitten (kitten@vcn.net), July 25, 1999.

And you sound like you got the best of all three races! I would think that minorities, especially blacks, would get it real fast. They have been "getting it" all their lives!!

Taz..who wants EVERYONE to get it!

-- Taz (Tassie@aol.com), July 25, 1999.

the inner city has much less access to i.s.p.'s,and how many gi's do you know that don't surf the web.
