How to Solar Pasteurize Contaminated Water

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Here is a very informative web page that tells how to build a solar water pasteurizer, and also about a new sort of test for e. coli that doesn't require a lab. Hope my link works. (email is real if you remove the X)

Thanks, Momacares.

Hmm, now how do I avoid rolling over and squashing those test tubes?

Another solar pasteurizer site, with pictures, is:

This is basically just putting a container of water into a solar oven. I believe the better approach is to make a solar distiller. Its not much harder and provides safer water. I don't have a link, but I found it just surfing around our many prep sites.

My idea is to solar pasturize and then to filter. Solar distilling is very slow in regard to volume, I think.

At the link to Recent Advances in Solar Water Pasteurization the author says: "Write to SBJ and we will send you a small amount of carnauba wax to experiment with."

What is SBJ?

In another place he says parenthetically ""MYVEROL" 18-06K, Eastman Kodak Co., Kingsport, TN 37662"

This looks like a product name for the pre-made solar pasturizers and a partial address. I'm trying to write to it & will post my results.

I've been trying to obtain these pasturization indicators from another source, but my mail was undeliverable.

Here's what I'm building. "Sand"- maybe this is the link you were looking for.

My plan is to build a really nice one out of wood and glass and to collect as many materials as I can to make them for the whole neighborhood. I'll use oven gauges ($3 at walmart) in these if I have to. They're about the same price, apparently. The indicator has the advantage of showing if the temperature got higher earlier.

I found an order form for the pasturization indicators.
