Where will you be at midnight?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Are you going to be online? Or off partying? Or watching TV?

I'd suggest signing up for this volunteer watchdog service - there are already hundreds of folks all over the world (more are needed) so check it out:

This was noted on Gary North's site and Westergaard recently. Let's get some good reports, live and raw with no media spin to it!

My wife and I will be one-half block from home, at my folks. I will have my last monster antipasto there (but no booze) at 11 P.M., THEN have my hands on the flashlight and shortwave at about midnight. We will keep an eye on situation and the two elderly neighbors at each of our houses. I have my "supermarket" at my folk's basement with iron bars encased in cement moorings. If we have power overnight in our area I will check the webs of sites and friends around the country as the hours pass. I WILL NOT check the phone at 12:01!

I will be thinking of all you fine folks at this time also and wishing you the best to you and your families. John in New York State.

Part II: Will not run generator for the first hour or two unless we have an early minus ten that night.

My immediate family will be with my bro/sis in law. 20 min each way from our home or our mothers. There will not be any alcohol. Many ribs and shrimp. Much laughter at previous yrs uneeded worries, and many prayers for healthy new yr. Ribs and shrimp may not be available if the banks tank, can be replaced easily.

Mrs. Driver and I plan on ringing in the new year as we have for more or less the last 12 years, at a friend's house, deep in rural Geauga County, returning to the house about 0300. NEITHER of us expects the world to turn into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight. It wil take a bit longer than that.

Examining the inside of my eyelids safe in my own bed. Just another night.

If the power goes off, I'll get up and cook breakfast for my family while the kids play games. Just another holiday morning.

If the power goes off a week later, I'll come home and cook dinner for my family while the kids play games. Just another day.

Only thing differant.... if the power goes off I'll be looking in on the elderly neigbors every few hours instead of every few days.

Now, around about 6-1-2000 I may be starting to really sweat the financial fall out, if the power stays up.

At the risk of "nit-picking", midnight is not the precise time to be concerned about. Power-plants are generally set to UTC/GMT. If I recall, at that time of year, 00:00 1/1/2000 GMT is 19:00 12/31/1999 EST.

Don't know about water/sewage operations, though.

I'll be listening to the shortwave starting early in the evening to see how Japan and the East are doing.

Expect to see Europe go dark around 00:01 GMT. If not will breathe a sigh of relief and go to bed.

OK, so this will be AFTER the bank runs, right...?

Lord only knows what late December will bring. I don't expect much in the way of normalcy. The whole thing is going to be real strange.

I'll be wearing my tuxedo at a dinner party, regaling friends and family members with stories of Doomers huddled in their bunkers with only their short-wave and M-16 for company. We'll laugh and eat (and probably drink too much) At midnight when one year turns into another there will be toasts to our good health and the evolution of the human species. I will feel sad for the Doomers who have foregone this occasion because of irrational fears and unnecessary paranoia.

So I have finally found you! You do lurk here! You know I'll be at work. Talk to you soon.

I pray that you are correct.

We'll be home, no drinking, off the grid, battery tv running, radio running, from about 3PM 12/31/1999, keeping an eye on the neighborhood, checking on a couple older folks. Sounds like most of our neighbors will be doing the same, which sounds real good to us.

While part of me would like to be sitting on top of Ayers Rock, smoking DMT and waiting for the Mothership to land, the sensible part of me (-virtually non-existent 'til I started hanging out at TB2000) would like to be minding a well remediated network in some fairly secure company. I'll be on line plus listening to the radio, and very sober.

Listen to Art, He seems to be the only one who knows what's going on.

Go out to dinner with the family, return by 10 pm or so, enjoy the evening and have a quiet New Year, probably check the happenings on tv or the net. The norm for us.. We are not the frivolous type, prefer the quiet life in the country..

I will be at home having a small dinner party with my friends who live in the neighborhood, NOT drinking alcohol, with my pager on. Unfortunately I am on-call all weekend in case something goes wrong with the factory I work at, so no booze... Not that I would drink any that weekend ANYWAY.

We also plan on shrimp, crab, and prime rib as part of the repast, along with ice cream, and pastry...

I am not anticipating TEOTWAWKI, But I am not discounting it either.

Partying...at home!

-- br14 (br14@bout.doen), July 22, 1999.

I'll probably be partying with friends or family, having a good old time. But I will never be far away from my stash of rice and beans or my short wave radio.

Really, though, the intensity of my buzz will be inversely proportional to the level of disruptions experienced in Europe and Asia during the day. If Russia and the whole EC are blacking out, I will probably hunker down with a cup a coffee and keep a close watch on things in case they get funny. But I'll probably be glad (no matter what happens) that the Russians hadn't accidentally launched a few thousand megatons in our general direction. Dec. 31, not the midnight rollover into January, is going to be the scariest moment for me.

-- coprolith (coprolith@rocketship.com), July 22, 1999.

coprolith,

I agree, the 31st of December should set the tone for the rollover here in the US.

Might be interesting, but I hope not. I hope it is the most BORING day of the year...

sniffin'...

I have no idea.

But I do plan to have a glass of Champagne in one hand and a gas mask in the other. Just not sure what outfit to wear.

I will be at the ranch holding a BBQ for about 50 folks. BBQ beef, pig, corn, etc. We have a band set to play, open mic. for those of us with "some" talent :) I also plan on proposing to my girlfriend that evening with all our friends and family in attendance. Should throw her for a loop!! We will have champagne, wine, beer, soda's etc. No drunk drivers allowed, lots of room for guests. Crowd age runs from 22 to 50 so this will be fun. I've got a fireworks display planned for midnight. All in all everyone should have fun!!

Now I'm planning on dressing up in my tux jacket, best black double dyed Levis and my snakeskin boots. To top it off I have a black Stetson with a silver band that belonged to my Father. And the best part wil be the ear to ear grin I will have at being able to do this for all of my friends!!

I'll worry about the next day when it gets here. I've done all I can, my family and friends are covered, so I'm going to enjoy myself and have fun.

Is it my turn to play guitar......Pleeeeeeease!!!!!!
