Check out http://www.nola.com/t-p/national/9907200264.html to understand the situation in Louisiana.

The text below is from the Times-Picayune newspaper article of today 7/21/99. The question is: Who is closer to the truth? Mark Drennen or the GAO? (Remember that Louisiana is identified by the bright red color on the map at http://www.senate.gov/~y2k/hearings/071599/nasire_map.gif.) By the way, the Times-Picayune never mentioned a word about the GAO report. Could this be journalism by selective press release?

Critical state government computers are about 87 percent ready to greet the new millennium and the rest should be ready before the witching hour Jan. 1, Commissioner of Administration Mark Drennen said Tuesday.

In a news briefing, Drennen said that 484 of the 557 "mission critical" systems are ready for implementation and are now "Y2K compliant," meaning they should not shut down or fail come the new year.

A "mission critical" system is one the state defines as key to affecting the health and safety of the public, those integral in running state business or core economic systems.

Drennen said with five months to go, he doesn't see any major problems that would prevent state agencies from being computer-ready and able to conduct business on Jan. 1.

Well, I guess I should feel better - but we still have a nuclear plant and a gazillion chemical plants along the river in New Orleans - keep dreaming about glowing in the dark.

That should have read, "I keep dreaming about glowing in the dark"
