I just found the State of Hawaii's most recent status report. link

(1) If I am reading it right, it shows that as of July 1, over 60,000 hours of work remain to be done. The governor's message stated that the state plans to get it all done by October...That allows about 500 working hours left, which means that the State would require 300 programmers dedicated to Y2K over the next several months. I am not at all sure that the state Y2K project staff is nearly that large! And that is assuming that no slippage will occur.

(2) The report also shows that remediation has been started on 664 systems (of 707) (not including University). 43 systems not yet started??? Only finished on 565.

(3) My take...a lot of work has been done to get where we are. Most of the systems will make it...but I certainly won't bet that all State of Hawaii mission critical systems will be remediated by January 1, let alone the October due date. Based on my 1/3 Century in IT about the same time they plan to have the systems remediated.

Have you read today's Reuters:Y2k Glitch Likely to Disrupt Trade: U.S Official? It's a report from the State Department. Just a local girl here looking around, and it's sounding not so good. I've been looking into the state reports too -- not very reassuring. Any thoughts on what our local communities should be (should have) be doing?

Not so good news for the Bows.

I won't make it to Kauai, but I will be on the big island and Maui in a couple of weeks. Very excited to see my wife's extended family again, but it will also be hard to think that it could be the last time we see them for a LONG time.
