Hamasaki: Here's the latest Y2K (BAD) news

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

from c.s.y2k today:

If anyone has made it this far, here's the Y2K news. 1. The FAA will announce 100% compliance in a day or two. Watch for it. And if you believe that, well, JEM has a bank for you to leave your money in. Jim Lord savaged the FAA rep. 2. Bruce Webster has moved 1 notch more doomer based on his reading the congressional report. 3. The word in the back of the room at WDC Y2K is that we've been set up by the happy talkers. The "it's the foreign countries", "it's the SMEs", "it's the towns and counties", is just a diversion from the big systems in the big organizations. 4. An SSA programmer reported that the SSA is *still* not done and is bleeding programmers. He thought their systems would more or less work but shake-my-fist, they're not done, DONE. 5. There were reports of Y2K projects spinning out of control, where things were on track until *after* a December 1998 completion date but when the IV&V team finished and the enterprise consultant rejiggered the schedule, the new completion date is October 1999. 6. September 1999 WDC Y2K guest speakers are John Ko-Skin-em and Joel Willemssen in a dual to the death. cory hamasaki http://www.kiyoinc.com/current.html 163 Days.

Thanks again a. Do we have to pay you for this service? b

PLEASE.

Will everyone please stop worrying.

Worrying about will only make things worse.

It will be OK. Just STOP thinking about it.

It is No Big Deal. Everybody is working on it.

We're not worrying (well...maybe a little, who wouldn't), we're PLANNING & PREPARING. Worrying will make it worse for an individual's health or nerves, but won't affect the system. I'm glad your crystal ball is working since "It will be OK." Can you tell me who's going to win the World Series, Super Bowl, and the next Heavyweight bought - I'd sure like to know in advance ;-) It is a Big Deal - that's why everybody is working on it.

Uh, friends. I think Happy's was a facetious post, mocking the Happy Face tone of some news reports and Polly postings. They didn't include a "smiley", but the tone and handle were just a bit TOO sunny, methinks.

-- Mac (sneak@lurk.hid), July 21, 1999.

This would be a little more convincing if it wasn't for the usual doomer approach: "The word in the back of the room" "An SSA programmer reported" "There were reports of". All completely unsubstantiated and as usual NO NAMES. This is little better than "My brothers best friends barber knows a guy who knows a guy..."

And precisely why is "The FAA will announce 100% compliance in a day or two." BAD news?

Bad for Doomer prognosticators perhaps...

Y2K Pro: for your perusal:

[From this ATC/FAA thread]

The FAA says a $13 billion upgrade of the nation's air traffic control system now under way should reduce such problems and make maintenance easier.

Shumann, the FAA spokesman, said contract negotiations have bogged down over pay, job security and the amount and type of work that can be transferred to private contractors.

The agency adamantly denied that its equipment replacements have jeopardized air traveler safety.

"On major systems, we introduce them gradually into operation so both the technicians and the controllers are fully aware of the systems and comfortable with it when we use it exclusively to control air traffic," Shumann said.

He also complained that leaflets distributed by the union on July 2 did not disclose that the union was in the midst of negotiating a contract with the FAA.

The system specialists planned to distribute leaflets in Atlanta; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Beaumont, Texas; Buffalo, New York; Corpus Christi, Texas; Covington, Kentucky; Dallas; Houston; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Florida; Knoxville, Tennessee; Memphis, Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee; Oklahoma City; Orlando, Florida; Pittsburgh; San Antonio; Seattle; Tampa, Florida; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Tyler, Texas.

I think we can surmise that the aforementioned airports have not had the new ATC system implemented, if the Air Traffic Controllers are planning to distribute leaflets there.

So the FAA will be 100% compliant in theory in two days?

You're an Aviation chick: what say you on this?

So the FAA will be 100% compliant in theory in two days?

You're an Aviation chick: what say you on this?

You're the king of the strawmen Mr. Dunderhead. Who said the FAA will be 100% compliant in two days? Did the FAA say it? No. Cory said it. Perhaps you should wait until Friday before asking your question.

Perhaps you should also aquire some facts before stating that all those airports will be aquiring new ATCs. Some already have them and some are not slated to receive them until next year. You need to do some research fella before ya start dribblin' again...

Y2K Pro:

"And precisely why is "The FAA will announce 100% compliance in a day or two." BAD news?

Question is, if it were announced, would it be valid news??

The ones that you mentioned that aren't slated to get the new ATC equipment until next year.... they can run on what they have? What they're running on is Y2KOK?

Dude, you really ought to share more facts with us..... especially regarding Aviation, where you seem pretty well-informed.

-- lisa (lisa@work.now), July 21, 1999.

Y2K Pro,

So, if the FAA does announce 100% compliance by Friday, does that mean you'll reconsider your position?

Just wondering...

-- M.C. Hicks (mhicks@greenwich.com), July 21, 1999.

.... And if you believe that, well, JEM has a bank for you to leave your money in...

Just noticed that JEM's big brother John is a confirmed speaker at that DC Y2K conference that the Washington Post is hosting next week. Why do I have images of Cory standing at the back of the room and heckling him? 8-}]

"So, if the FAA does announce 100% compliance by Friday, does that mean you'll reconsider your position?

Just wondering...

Depending on what they said, Of course I would. Would you?

Just wondering...

P.S. If nothing happens on Friday will you still worship Cory?

A friend of mine working at CAK in the NOAA office has only one thing to say about FAA, and it isn't spellable. Insert Bronx cheer.wav heer and youwill get the point.

Unfortunately, i can't OUT him without his permission, but I CAN say he is one of the larger doomers I know.

And no I don't think that Oberlin Control is on the list for this year, so CLE, CAK, BKL, LTN (I think), and a host of other airports will be in whatever shape they are

Come here for a second, PRO......ahhhh, there ya goooooo. You had a little sliver of potato chip stuck to your medulla oblongata, but I got it for ya! You didn't use the velcro in your last 'dip', did yooou?

Damnit Poole....you need to keep a closer eye on your little beaker buddy! You're so selfish....

Will, I think Pro's problem is that he's strapped into his high chair crooked.

-- a (a@a.a), July 21, 1999.

Y2K Pro,

As I am not advocating doom or gloom, I don't have a position to reconsider... nor do I "worship Cory" or Koskinen or CNN or any other Y2K information source (whether amateur, expert, gov-sanctioned, or whatever)... so nothing to give up there either, but hery... thanks for asking!

I've been reading Cory's material long enough to believe that he publishes in good faith. That's more than can be said for many megacorp media sources these days.

ROTFLMAO....... What the FAA compliant AGAIN? My question is this: If the counties and the towns and the SME'S and the rest of the world are not going to make according to our own Fed. Government, do not the towns and the counties and the SME's make up most of the U.S.? So I guess the fed is over reacting to y2k????? Better call poole. He can show them the error to their ways.

-- FLAME AWAY (BLehman202@aol.com), July 21, 1999.

Yes... Theyre compliant again, sorta.

FAA: All Systems Y2K-Compliant (Federal Computer Week)

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id= 0017Oh

Are their suppliers and airports "compliant?" Do the Air Traffic Controllers & computer engineers think they are "compliant?" And on... and on.

You could be right, a. It's just that everytime I see "Y2K PRO", I get this *vision* of him in saline solution, sporting a lovely glowing pink hue and can't help thinking of the movie, "The Man With Two Brains", you know, Steve Martin? Cracks me up!

Be sure to wear a hat if you go boating Pro!
