Y2K and "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

O.K. It may be a stupid analogy, but a fitting one, I think.

It's the first of the year and lots of folks are looking for visible failures. January 1, 1999 passes relatively uneventfully. People raise their eyebrows and wonder why not that much went wrong. They eagerly await the next critical date.

April comes and goes and nothing much happens. Folks begin to question if Y2K is so much hype and begin be far less concerned. Let's see how the states handle to FY rollover

July 1 seems like a non-event. The Pollies have a field day. Polls show that fewer and fewer people plan to stock supplies.

September 9 passes with no major disasters. Y2K, it is decided by the masses, has definitely been an overblown hype-fest. Why won't those doomers just shut the hell up?

December 31, 1999. You know the rest of the parable

Sad but true. I've had the same thought. At least we've only got six months to wait now to know.

Especially since the Jan-Apr-Jul 1 glitches were NEVER claimed to be all the terrible in their own right, since they are exclusively confined to FINANCIAL APPLICATION SOFTWARE. The Y2K problems associated with embedded systems, hardware, operating systems, etc., are completely immune from such glitches.

"The Boy Who Cried Wolf" is a great analogy indeed. If it is not already, it ought to be added to that thread that was started recently asking for Y2K analogies.

Uh, Diane, I think you missed Aesop's point...

I think what Aesop meant was that on the eve of 1-1-00, the wolf will finally be there.

-- CygnusXI (noburnt@toast.net), July 20, 1999.

Roland,

Just pre-anticipating a disruptor holler accusing the TBY2K forum participants as yelling "wolf." Just pointing out "other" boyz are taking action.

Maybe that little fable will teach you Doomers to shut the hell up unless you got proof!! It's no wonder nobody your getting so much criticism, just like that little boy.

Of course some of you Doomers have to pound this through your thick skull, that fable was written about something that happened, not something that might happen. That wolf didn't appear just because one little boy was shouting about one.

And Y2K isn' going to appear just becasue your all shouting about it. Face it, it was already supposed to be here.

Suck,

For someone who thinks Y2K isn't real, you sure do spend alot of time here. Those clients of yours that you are "constantly in touch with" must wonder why they can never seem to get ahold of you!

I'm touched you are concerned about my financial well-being and all of the money I'm pouring down the drain. You are truly altruistic.

But, Suck, I am truly concerned about your mental well-being. This forum and Y2K in general seems to be taking quite a toll on you. Frankly your posts are getting more and more emotional. You seem distraught. Are you sleeping well at night? Has Y2K become your primary focus in life? The signs are all there.

Why don't you take a week or two off to put things into perspective. Don't worry...we'll be here when you return. Y2K Pro will hold down the fort for you.

Best Wishes for a speedy recovery,

R.

yummy that yelling boy was tasty, like it better when they fight and squirm, easy pickings when nobody listen to them anymore, lots more where he came from, my appetite is sharpened, down the block I go, sniffing them out, yum yum dum dum

Doomers suck reminds me of a 3 year old that liked to hear his own voice and throw temper tantrums. Its just a junior high kid trying to get attention. Wonder if his mommy knows he's spending this much time on the computer ?

I have 36 typed pages listing Y2K failures (from just 2 sources) that have already happened that I found by links from (I believe) Cory's site. Mike Hyatt (something of a programmer himself) has noted that probably less than a tenth of Y2K computer failures ever get publicized at all. 36 x 10 (hope the math didn't lose the trolls) = 360 pages of proof. Guess the trolls were too busy looking for new synonyms of four-letter words to read up on evidence of this magnitude.

...another piece of nonsense from the prostitute known as MinnesotaSmith. "Things are really, really bad - better come to my Web site and I will sell you a load of overpriced crap". Fleecing the Doomers - few do it better...

Bingo, suck, Where's YOUR proof! Didn't you say in a previous thread that NO ONE knows the outcome?!?!

Also by Suck:

"That wolf didn't appear just because one little boy was shouting about one."

...and he didn't disapear by closing your eye's either einstein.

And again-Suck:

"And Y2K isn' going to appear just becasue your all shouting about it. Face it, it was already supposed to be here."

...so now your using "doomers" as your point of reference(The one's who said we'd feel the effect's by now)? Hellooooo, how could y2k already be here, it's only July of 1999? Do you feel"jilted" by those who said it would come early---is that why your so bitter and irrational??

Suck's right, we doomer's should all bow to his supreme "logic"!

If a "poly" were truly a "polly" why would they continue to waste their time on these threads???????

When are yous guys gunna larn yourself that you cannot prove the future?

-- Valkyrie (anon@please.net), July 20, 1999.

Gosh the truth must be killing you guys today, you've got you little doomer spiked clubs and your coming after me in a fury of criticism. But where is your Jo An Effect? Y2K is already supposed to be here, and to the twit who said otherwise in an above post, you don't know about the horrible predictions Ed and Scary have been making for years.

Now Ed is going to write a long post soon and explain why the things he said were just bullshit and how everyone needs to buckle down now because this is REALLY when he start being right about something.

What about the FY2000 rollover disaster??? What happened there? Can I be expected to believe someone who makes these kinds of predictions and turn out wrong over and over and over again.

Agree completely Suck. This nonsense just isn't worth you time.

I guess that "twit" was moi. That's such a cute sounding word. Hey SUCK, maybe after puberty you can move up to word's with five letter's-Buttmunch. YOU wrote:

"Y2K is already supposed to be here, and to the twit who said otherwise in an above post, you don't know about the horrible predictions Ed and Scary have been making for years."

Did it EVER occur to you that some of us "doomers", don't follow individual's like ed and scary[gary?]? Well...did it? SOME of us look at the info being put out by REAL entities(read;corporations/watchdog groups), and could care less about an individual's OPINION. We all know people are alway's full of BS opinions, that have little bearing on the truth....like your's, for example. Well, I gotta go, I'm late for my remedial twit training seminar and all out of troll food to boot.

Oh, just another reminder. Y2k=YEAR 2000....NOT YEAR sometime in 1999. I thought you might have understood that the first time, oh well.
