Eddy: I am not sure of the derivation of the term but we were using it in the Air Force in the sixties to describe Americans whose interest lay in very narrow confines.

It's definitely not a new term. I remember first hearing it during my college days in the early 80s.

I find its use somewhat offense, because it creates a stereotype that really does more to obscure than enlighten.
