Medical Mal-practice crisis looming

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Trial lawyers across the US are holding weekly seminars to teach each other how to handle Y2K lawsuits. The big goldmine is medical malpractice since the medical industry is least prepared. Possible example..Hospital didn't check for water condensate in the fuel tank of the backup generator. The power failed and 4 patients die while in surgery. Use your imagination. The y2k problem will open up a pandora box of malpractice problems. 80 percent of the malpractice insurance across the US is assessible. That is, malpractice awards are passed on to the the insured by assessment. Hundreds of millions in awards and Medical providers are not protected by the new law. Thousands of health care providers are going to cash out by Dec 30. 100,000 physicians, dentists, hospitals, clinics in bankruptcy is a real and present danger. Think about it...

Do you think these folks have taken any time out to spend on y2k preparations or have they been to busy trying to learn how to make a goldmine?

TO ALL:

My colleagues in the main have been, are, and will forever be --- unable to think outside the box. Noo, so what else is noo?

As far as the threat of malpractice impacting our post-y2k health, if that's ALL we've got to worry about, I guess I've been worrying about the wrong things for the last 3 years (since I GI.) IOW, if the insurance industry, and the lawyer industry are still in biz, Y2K should be a relatively small BITR.
