Cities Not Ready For Y2K

Here's the concluding paragraph (it's also a pull quote); emphasis in original:

"Only very efficient executive-level management and contingency planning can sustain us through the upcoming historic date change," added panel vice chairman Sen. Christopher Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat.

If that's true, we're doomed. :-(

Lane, you seem to know executives only too well.

From the article:

The Senate panel displayed a chart showing that only 43 percent of the 21 cities' key systems were said by the cities themselves to be ready as of July for the date change.

The 21 largest cities only have 43% of their mission-critical systems ready as of this month? Not good news...

Still no link to the GAO report itself. Has anyone else seen it?

Who gives a sh*t.

The GAO reports arent accessible yet, but... they are...

CORRESPONDENCE--Reported Y2K Status of the 21 Largest U.S. Cities. GAO/AIMD-99-246R, July 15.

Year 2000 Computing Challenge: Federal Efforts to Ensure Delivery of Key State-Administered Benefits, by Joel Willemssen, director of civil agencies information systems, before the Senate Special Committee on the Year 2000 Technology Problem. GAO/T-AIMD-99- 241, July 15.

And they will end up here...

Recent Reports (Arranged by Title)

http:// www.gao.gov/new.items/newtitle.htm

And here...

GAO Reports--The Year 2000 Computing Crisis

Eventually.

Thanks for the post Lane, if this is not a "Wake Up Call' I can't imagine what would be. The fact that California, the most populous state in the Union, is categorized with 8 other states as having done less than 70% of their mission critical work ought to "Ring a Bell' loud and clear that major problems lie ahead.

Ok Decker, I'm ready to read your SPIN !!

Thought this thread important enough to bring back to the top of the heap. Sure would like to see some comments from our Pals Decker, Maria and Anita. You folks have been mighty quite on this topic.

Ray, just why did you forget Poole and Flint? (our dear Flint)

-- George (jvilches@sminter.com.ar), July 16, 1999.

George, my sincere apologies to Flint, Poole, Cherri, Deano, y2k Amateur and any other Polly/Troll I missed. I promise it will not happen again.

Now, could we hear from you fine folks regarding your thoughts and lack thereof on this rather ominous thread?

Ray

Here we have one of the most serious reports to surface on y2k and we cannot get ONE polly to comment.

Truly a sad reflection on these quiblers.

Ray ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, still waiting !!

-- Ray (ray@totacc.com), July 16, 1999.

OK, since we can't seem to get a bonafide polly to belly up to the bar, let me see if I can act in their place.

The Hoffmeister approach: Look, the cities SAID that they will be ready. So whats the problem? Do you have PROOF that they will not be ready? If they SAY they will be ready, then we must assume that they will be. That is logical.

The Paul Davis approach: Unfortunately, this happens all the time in the professional world. Indeed, based on the good news reports that we are getting, the cities are on track and will indeed make it on time.

The Flint approach: Even if some cities do not technically achieve complete absolute Y2K compliance (as if such a thing can be defined), enough work has been done and continues to be done so that we can rule out any bad smelling or tasting problems due to Y2K. Unless we do get a bad problem, in which case it will probably be a very bad problem. But there is no reason to think this will actually happen. Unless it does. But it won't.

The Deano approach: Duhhh. Surfs up.

The Maria approach: You doomers always fixate on bad news. There is plenty of good news. What about the good news?

Y2K Pro: [UNAVAILABLE DUE TO BUSY FRIDAY NIGHT AT BURGER KING.]

Poole: Just a bunch of political crap to make the Senators look good. Ignore it. Mr. Decker:
-- ahh, skip double-D, I'd rather watch a mudwrestling video.

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), July 16, 1999.

-- King of Spain, ROTFLMAO, the only suggestion I have would be to triple the length of Flint's comments. No need to really make any sense out of the extension just keep typing letters until the size of his comment has tripled.
