CBS affiliates are NOT running Y2K documentary

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm disappointed that Y2KNEWSWIRE has been sending out info about CBS's supposed airing of this documentary. Unfortunately, it diminishes Y2KNEWSWIRE's credibility.

NONE OF THESE 32 STATIONS IS A CBS AFFILIATE!!!! Not one.

If you don't believe me, check out this link. It shows each station in each market by state ... and indicates whether they're an independent or are associated with a network (could either be an affiliate or company-owned). http://www.UltimateTV.com/tv/us/

My sister was with a CBS affiliate for over 20 years, and has been with FOX for 6+ years. She's been visiting with the kids and when this CBS stuff came up, we started to do some sleuthing. Cause it didn't make sense to her how this whole thing was being handled.

Don't know who initially wrote this:

So far, though, they've decided NOT to run it even though they signed a contract for it. Hmmm... wonder why?

When any network buys the rights to air a documentary, it LOCKS UP the show, meaning nobody else can air it. In this way, intentionally or otherwise, the general public doesn't get to see the show.>

This is hogwash. CBS did not lock up the show. It's running on very small independent stations. It is very unlikely that CBS will be picking up this show which was developed and is being promoted by an independent film company. Especially since it's already being run in these small markets.

Apparently it was pitched to networks, who had no interest. Then was sold to these small independents.

From my perspective, this independent film production company (or who ever is distributing it) - lied to Y2KNEWSWIRE.

Especially in light of this comment:

If you'd like to help this effort, instead of calling your local affiliate and asking, "When will the Y2K documentary run?" just call them and say, "Hey, I'd REALLY like to see a Y2K documentary!" That will provide pressure to the head honchos who are reportedly going into another round of negotiations soon.

Trust me. There are no negotiations going on with CBS honchos.

CBS already has their own people working on Y2K stories and already have their own contacts - and are making more. Remember, CBS did the hard-hitting "60 MINUTES" show.

Several weeks ago they were in Oregon for 1-2 weeks filming. I was at a community meeting where they were filming. They focused on Oregon after reading widely quoted actual testimony at a government hearing on community preparedeness, from the person who previously headed the Rogue River Valley Y2K Group.

CBS is doing a show scheduled for this coming Sunday AM. Sunday Morning News with Charles Osgood.

I was puzzled by how this whole supposed "CBS Expose" was being handled.

As was "steverino" (who's with Turner Broadcasting):

I love Y2KNEWSWIRE but I think they have a short somewhere! As I said before, networks don't "download" programs to the affiliates that they are going to broadcast nationally. The post above says "the network has decided to air the first two parts..." If the network was airing the show it would not be "downloaded to the affiliates"--no need. If the show was being sent to the affiliates for them to broadcast at their leisure, then the "network" would not be airing "the first two parts"! Or any part!

In any case I just got off the phone with a friend at the CBS affiliate here in Atlanta (WGNX), who runs the programming department and she didn't know anything about it. She said that a lot of people had been calling about it though, so she got on the phone to her contact at CBS programming IN NEW YORK and THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT!

So I would say to Y2KNEWSWIRE that they need to double-check their sources. steverino (steve.kuhn@turner.com), July 15, 1999.

Another poster gave additional details --- though the mention of CBS is in error:

I received the following information this afternoon on the so-called CBS 4 part Y2K series:

(1). This is an Independent film company production and is not the property of the CBS Network.

(2). It has apparently been sold or picked-up by 32 CBS affiliates around the country. [See my comments - none of these 32 stations are CBS affiliates.]Most of these are in small market areas and most are East Coast. Philadelphia is the largest of the 32 by far. Los Angeles-Nada, San Luis Obispo-Si.

(3). Segments 1 and 2 are in the can but 3 and 4 have yet to be completed.

(4). Segments 1 and 2 may be shown back to back by some of the affiliates starting this evening, so I am told.

(5). Segment 1 was filmed in March of this year and features some well-known players who have since left the game.

(6). For the most part, the entire Western U.S. market will not be airing this series.

I trust this is good info.

WHILE SOME ARE DISAPPOINTED THAT A HARD-HITTING STORY WILL NOT BE ON CBS ...

What disappoints me the most is that this can undermine Y2KNEWSWIRE's credibility. They have done an excellent job thusfar, and I hate to see something like this occur.

If any of you have been forwarding emails about this. Please take the time to "cut & paste" my post and forward to those who you inadvertently sent this information to --- so we can nip this in the bud.

If any of you have contacts at Y2KNEWSWIRE, please send them this info.

Thanks.

Cheryl: It's disappointing that it's apparently not affiliated with CBS, even though it is a real documentary and is being broadcast on 31 stations. But I have never seen anything on the Y2KNewsWire site that officially made that claim, only "urban legend" type emails, have you?

-- a (a@a.a), July 16, 1999.

a--

Roleigh reported the CBS story yesterday by referring to a onelist URL

http://www.onelist.com/listcenter.cgi?listname=earlywarning&yy=16898>h ttp: //www.onelist.com/listcenter.cgi?listname=earlywarning&yy=16898

added with some commentary.

This could be the email you are referring to .. (shrug)

Thanks for clearing that up Cheryl.

-- Stash (Stashin@home.com), July 16, 1999.

This does seem to have taken on the life of an "urban legend".

However, Y2KNEWSWIRE has apparently written something about "the documentary". But, it's for members only. I'm not a member. And Y2KNEWSWIRE does send out email updates to members. So, I surmised that when reference was first made on this thread that, in fact, it was a Y2KNEWSWIRE email update. But, like I said, I'm not a member - so don't know what Y2KNEWSWIRE actually published/posted to members.

Here's what's on Y2KNEWSWIRE site: Members: click for a news update covering the documentary, the medical research device, the 50% bogus claims factor and the plants.

Michael: I feel badly that Roleigh also got hoodwinked on this too. He's a good guy. Works d*mn hard on Y2K issues. Has been for a long time.

I couldn't get access to the link you provided though ... to see what was actually said. What subject and topic do I have to go to, to get there without a hot link?

Thanks,

i am a member of y2kNewswire and received the member-alert last night. it simply listed the 32 stations that would be airing the documentary at some point. the e-mail DOES state that these are "off the network" but does refer to these stations as being "affiliates". Some of the stations appear to be in rather large areas; Detroit, Pittsburg, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Cincinatti. No air dates were given at all.

-- don (mmtgman@aol.com), July 16, 1999.

CLARIFICATION: here is the exact quote as it appears thrju y2kNewswire: "Here's the air dates for the Y2K documentary *off the network* - these are directly through the affiliate stations, not through CBS."

32 stations are then listed but no air dates are ever given. hope this helps.

I'm not even sure it's a "documentary." I have a hunch it's an infomercial. If so, it'll backfire, and the pollys will use it as further "evidence" that y2k is a marketing hoax.

OK, folks. What are the 32 stations?

IMHO, "Y2k Newswire" needs to be taken with a large grain of salt.

Why? Founder (and writer) Mike Adams as many businesses which rely on people purchasing Y2k information/supplies, etc.

Also--as I recall--there was the debacle involving Mike Adams' underground authorship (no byline given) of an article for WorldNetDaily in which Greg Caton (Lumen foods) was improperly or inaccurately (can't remember which) quoted. Caton was furious.

All of the above makes the alarm bells start ringing in my brain.

In summary, consider "not only the source" but the potential hidden agendas. True for any publication, Internet based or not.

Just my 2 cents. . .

:)

'Nuff said?

don,

Some of the stations appear to be in rather large areas; Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Cincinatti.

Though some of the stations are in large areas, they compete against major networks and cable companies like FOX. While the "viewing audience" in certain markets is quite large, the "market share" of the independents is very, very small. They just don't have the funds for marketing/advertising to direct viewers away from the "majors" to their stations in these larger markets. Also, some of these stations have signals which are weaker than the networks, and it's physically impossible to reach the vast viewing audience.

Here's Philadelphia as an example.

PHILADELPHIA KYW CBS 3 WBPH 60 WCAU NBC 10 WFMZ 69 WGTW 48 <---------- Here's where it's airing WHYY PBS 12 WLVT PBS 39 WNPA UPN 19 WPHL WB 17 WPSG UPN 57 WPVI ABC 6 WTGI 61 WTVE HSN 51 WTXF FOX 29 WYBE PBS 35 UTV13 13

<"Here's the air dates for the Y2K documentary *off the network* - these are directly through the affiliate stations, not through CBS.">

CBS has absolutely nothing to do with this. I checked out each and every station listed. All are independents. None are associated with CBS. CBS NYC Programming confirmed that they have nothing to do with this documentary.

The use of the term "affiliate" is very misleading. The sentence above implies that these are CBS affiliates. They are not!

I sure wish Y2KNEWSWIRE would clarify this. Y2KNEWSWIRE has validated much of my on-going, independent research of the past few years. If they don't clarify this CBS deal, it would make ... even me ... question their credibility and motives.

To check out any of these stations, see this link: http://www.UltimateTV.com/tv/us/ Go to "Television Stations": Select a state or call letters

cheryl,

i, like you, have been somewhat taken aback at the way y2kNewswire has been releasing this info. in my earlier statement above, i merely pointed out what the exact verbage of their sentence was. i can find no evidence that any of these stations were CBS affiliated either. likewise, i stated that some of these stations were in rather large markets, not that they reached large audiences. we have similiar stations where i live. i have personally spoken with mike adams in the past and have found him to be very genuine and certainly hope that nothing sinister is going on at his place. he has told me that he felt like this documentary would be an eye-opening piece for the polly's and i for one, would like to see it. perhaps someone soon will be able to get it into the proper arena for it's full showing potential.

From: David Bradshaw >

I just got off the phone with Sam Cooper, spokesman for Mutual Media Fund, producers of "Y2K: A World in Crisis." "Yes it is going to air ... tonight on American Independent Network between 8:00PM and 10PM Eastern--5:00-7:00PM Pacific."

I have seen Part one of this special which has been nominated for an Emmy. It is very credible and informative. It features five celebrity hosts; Dick Van Patten, Richard Anderson, Richard Roundtree, Hugh O'Brian, and Deborah Winters.

It will awake many people. I have not taken the time to review Part two (which will also air tonight).

Mr. Cooper has asked Y2KNET and Swiss America to co-sponsor the CBS airing. He had hoped to debute the special on CBS, but could not get it cleared before today, July 15th which is the deadline for all Emmy nominations in 1999. We are presently considering his proposal.

We have just completed our own Y2K documentary "Preparing Wisely for the Next Millennium." As the producer and host I am a little biased, however early reviews are good. Find out yourself by visiting our site at www.y2knet.com and ordering your free copy. I will post all reviews on the web by next week along with any news on CBS airing of "Y2K: A World in Crisis."

Sincerely,

David Bradshaw Y2KNET

I called WBQC in Cincinnati. They no nothing about any Y2K documentary although they had recieved a few calls today. So the list is down to 31.

-- Eric (eric.amy@yahoo.com), July 16, 1999.

I'M DISGUSTED BY THIS WHOLE DEAL. Why in the h*ll did they have to bring CBS into this? The way this whole thing has been handled ... I have no desire to watch this show if and when it ever airs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------

"Mr. Cooper [spokesman for Mutual Media Fund, producers of "Y2K: A World in Crisis] has asked Y2KNET and Swiss America to co-sponsor the CBS airing." [THERE IS NO CBS AIRING!!!!]

"He had hoped to debute the special on CBS, but could not get it cleared before today, July 15th which is the deadline for all Emmy nominations in 1999 ..." [HE HOPED]

"Yes it is going to air ... on American Independent Network" [NOT CBS]

-- Cheryl (Transplant@Oregon.com), July 16, 1999.

I just visited the Y2KNEWSWIRE site, and they said that they have seen it, THEY HAVE A COPY. Hmmmmmm. Everybody wants to see it...."negotiations" fall through...Y2KNEWSWIRE conveniently has a copy...

Sounds like a very slick marketing campaign to me.

I expect to hear soon that Y2KNEWSWIRE will be making this video available at a very special (wink, wink) price...

By the way, I have been a television producer for 15 years and I have worked all over the country. I am sitting in a room full of producers and no one has ever heard of "American Independant Network". Also it is not listed in ANY of my professional directories (like Promax/BDA members) which is the industry BIBLE.

This is crap. If this video exists, you can bet it will be for sale...

I believe Y2KNewswire is affiliated with Gary North.

Because, when I first learned of Y2K, hearing Gary North speak, I signed up for his newsletter. Along with that, I immediately began receiving notices from Y2KNewswire.

OK Mike Adams, your the editor of y2k NewsWire and a participant on this forum, time to step up to the plate !!

go to: www.virtualissues.com/contents.htm. you can, in fact, buy this video now, for $29.95, which is precisely what y2kNewswire did.
