CBS Documentary Starts Tonite?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I received this by email -- either last night or this morning. Stay tuned.

Y2KNEWSWIRE has just learned -- and confirmed -- that the video feeds for the Y2K documentary will be downloaded via satellite to CBS affiliates on Thursday (July 15th).

Surprisingly, the network has decided to air the first TWO parts of the documentary back to back (parts 1 and 2). They will start airing as early as tomorrow night. Check your local CBS schedule. Most air times will be between 7pm and 9 p.m.

Remember, this is airing in 48 major markets, reaching millions of people. It MAY be a significant trigger event that raises awareness among the general public.

Visited CBS site to see if there was a listing. Could not find one. IF anyone learns of the title of this y2k documentary, what cities, link to info or the news show (such as 48 hrs. etc.), please post. Thanks!

It is doubtful anything will arouse the sleeping masses for a while yet. I would not have thought it could be this way a year ago, but it is now a fact that their is no news terrifying enough to cause the equity markets to go down. For the moment, anyway. The masses won't believe anything except that they will have unending prosperity. The arrogance is stunning. The panic, when it hits, will be even more so. We are being set up. Oh, boy, wait and see how the insane babylonianz react when it unwinds. Fear God, not Y2K. Fear God, not man.

I know it seems like "the boy who cried wolf" -- so many times on this forum we have seen some Y2K event happen that gets decent press coverage (e.g., 60 Minutes Dee Cee Y2K coverage, Van Nuys sewage spill), and we think: THIS IS IT, EVERYONE WILL TAKE Y2K SERIOUSLY NOW! And two days later its like Joe Sixpack never even heard of it.

But I think that each event DOES make an impression -- especially now that we are in the last half of 1999. I could see a "straw that broke the camels back" event occuring -- and this indeed could do it. (Of course, thats what I always say, and I'm always wrong.)

Somehow..... I see a story/article/conversation involving the backordered-ness of manual can-openers as the awareness catalyst.

Not sure why... I think manual can-openers are the most fulfilling "mascots" of Y2K.

Hey everybody! I would love to see this documentary. However, as you can tell from my e-mail address (real) I work for a major national and international network as a producer and I can tell you without a doubt that NATIONALLY BROADCAST PREMIERE SHOWS ARE NOT SENT VIA SATELITE TO AFFILIATES FOR REBRAODCAST LATER. All those tapes running simultaneously in each market could never be synchronized. The show, at showtime, is sent via satelite directly from the source (in this case, CBS New York) to the affiliates and then on to your home. Additionally, shows do not arrive at CBS "via satelite" They are delivered on Digi-beta weeks ahead of time by a bonded carrier and then go through a rigorous proccess of quality testing.

I would love to see the show, I hope that the reporter has just misinterpreted the information. Otherwise, it sounds fishy to me.

I have a ten foot dish and everyday there are shows on the satellite on what are called "wild feeds". These are taped for affiliates to download for later broadcasting. This happens with news reports to TV sitcoms. It occurs daily and all but the most sensitive can be viewed via these "wild feeds" if you can locate them on your satellite. Some are listed in satellite guides and some are not.

Found this little blip at y2knewswire

No additional information on date, time or name of program.

(snip)

"CBS clarifies: the network itself is not producing or running the Y2K documentaries, it is the local CBS affiliates who are individually broadcasting this documentary in over 32 markets around the country. Source: CBS in New York."

(end snip)

I would like to see this and hope someone will post additional information. Thanks.

I couldn't find anything about the program on cbs.com or in the local paper.

My sister was previously with a CBS affiliate and is now with FOX. Her comments ...

Even though 32 markets may have gotten the documentary today, it's up to those individual stations to determine when they'll be scheduling the shows. They will not necessarily be shown on the same day or at the same time.

Call your local CBS station and ask for "Programming". They can tell you if and when they'll be broadcasting the documentary.

King,

Funny you should mention 'the boy who cried wolf'. I bet if there weren't so many predictions from Yourdon, deJager and the gang about so many critical Y2K dates (many of which have already passed unnoticed) there might be a little more concern with the ONE DATE (actually ONE SECOND) that really counts - I actually agree with Sysman on this one.

Yall keep wondering when the people are going to wake up. Wake up to what?? Another 'critical date' and nothing. I'm sure not every business went through all the pre-Y2K 'critical' dates unscathed, but none have caused the widespread disruptions that were predicted by the 'Y2K experts'.

That just might be the problem. I know I for one would have surely changed my stance is some serious shit hit the fan on or shortly after any of the pre-Y2K critical dates.

The fact that there are failures in testing won't change many folks minds. There are supposed to be failures in testing. That the reason behind testing. Find the failures and fix'em.

Just a thought.

I love Y2KNEWSWIRE but I think they have a short somewhere! As I said before, networks don't "download" programs to the affiliates that they are going to broadcast nationally. The post above says "the network has decided to air the first two parts..." If the network was airing the show it would not be "downloaded to the affiliates"--no need. If the show was being sent to the affiliates for them to broadcast at their leisure, then the "network" would not be airing "the first two parts"! Or any part!

In any case I just got off the phone with a friend at the CBS affiliate here in Atlanta (WGNX), who runs the programming department and she didn't know anything about it. She said that a lot of people had been calling about it though, so she got on the phone to her contact at CBS programming IN NEW YORK and THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT!

So I would say to Y2KNEWSWIRE that they need to double-check their sources.

"I love Y2KNEWSWIRE but I think they have a short somewhere!"

Steverino- There is a reason behind why so many people on so many other forums refer to them as "Loosewire".

Probably nothing, but CBS News has scheduled a back-to-back presentation of 60-Minutes-II on July 27. This would fit several data points. (1) They are showing parts 1 and 2 back to back, and (2) it will be shown later in July (from an earlier post).

I have a related question about show mentioned at this forum. I read about it on a thread sometime in the last two weeks. It was supposedly a PBS documentary entitled "Vortex 2000." The person who posted about it indicated they had viewed it. I checked the newspaper's weekly listing and also the PBS website but have not been able to find out anything about this supposed broadcast. Can anyone provide info to verify that it was run or give info about when it may be run again?

I received the following information this afternoon on the so-called CBS 4 part Y2K series:

(1). This is an Independent film company production and is not the property of the CBS Network.

(2). It has apparently been sold or picked-up by 32 CBS affiliates around the country. Most of these are in small market areas and most are East Coast. Philadelphia is the largest of the 32 by far. Los Angeles-Nada, San Luis Obispo-Si.

(3). Segments 1 and 2 are in the can but 3 and 4 have yet to be completed.

(4). Segments 1 and 2 may be shown back to back by some of the affiliates starting this evening, so I am told.

(5). Segment 1 was filmed in March of this year and features some well-known players who have since left the game.

(6). For the most part, the entire Western U.S. market will not be airing this series.

I trust this is good info.
