I am leading a lecture on the dangers and symptoms of over-training to a group of 12 year old girl soccer players and their parents. It seems as though one of the coaches is overdoing it a bit and the girls are getting upset and do not want to play anymore. Any suggestions on articles or research done in the area of over-training in young athletes? I was going to touch upon player attrition due to burn out, stress of sport as opposed to having fun. Any info would be great! Thank you. Susanne Eymer

Hi SusanneSounds like a great a lecture you are doing, one sorely needed in many sports. I can't help you with very specific references, (it may be a bit late in any case) but I would reccomend you look at the work of Tara Scanlan on Sport Commitment and the role of Enjoyment. Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology 1993, 15 1-15 & JSEP 1993, 15 16-38.
It is important to stress that good performers always report that sport is a source of enjoyment to them and that is why they do it. If coaches take the fun out - chances are people will drop out.
Good luck cheers adam
