IBM Mainframe Salesman Prepping (Anecdotal)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Well, the following is strictly anecdotal/heresay from a conversation I had today with a man claiming to be an IBM mainframe salesman in Oregon. Though I'm not a mainframe programmer myself, he littered his conversation with enough acronyms that I know, that I'm pretty convinced he was genuine.

The salient points of interest were:

1) He has been selling for IBM for 25 years

2) He is prepping for "many months" including water etc.

3) Nobody is buying mainframes until at least February.

So he's mostly on vacation right now.

It was a brief conversation, at a "country fair" in Eugene. The reason it came up, is because I was wearing a shirt with a hitech company's logo and he asked if I was a programmer.

Which I am.

Anyway, for what it's worth, and grist for the mill (now that I know what that expression means!)

Jolly

Thanks for the info Jollyprez. Funny, we've run across few preparers, but discovered one Friday. The owner of our closest lumber store made a delivery to us and began asking questions about our beefy solar system. "Thinking Y2K?" he asked. The conversation blossomed and come to find out, he's preparing himself and has been increasing his inventory in any location possible for the business as well. He was late in deliveries and had to run, but, I'll be contacting him this week to inquire about fellow GIs in the area. yesssssssss. Small community and we've only been here since Nov.

Thank you for the post. My brother in law works for IBM in Rochester, MN. He is not the least bit concerned about Y2K, but his daughter, our niece and her husband also work there and they are preparing for the worst. I don't know why he doesn't believe their will be problems. The only subject about Y2K we have talked about was the embedded chips. I asked him "well what about all the embedded chips we keep hearing about." he said, "what about them?" "I said I don't know your the guy that works at IBM you tell me." He didn't answer me.
