exp. dates for meds

I met a lady that used to work for Johnson & Johnson. She said otc meds are good for 5 years past expiration date & may lose some of their potency, but not much. She said , when determining the exp. date, the manufacturers have to consider meds being stored in worse possible conditions, such as in desert heat. I thought that was interesting, since I live close to a sundry outlet & always hesitated to buy any med that was outdated.

Pharmacist's have lots of knowledge that goes untapped. They know what diseases and problems exist in an area cuz they dispense the rx to counter them. We periodically run our rx by them for review - keep this, toss that, etc. So far, tetracycline seems to be the only "uncooperative" rx as it can become damaging over time. That's _our_ rx. Ymmv
