Another Urban dweller tip

Here's something. If you live in the heart of the city and have made arrangements to be elsewhere if the lights go out, consider that you may not even be able to make it to the edge of town. With traffic lights out, the roads may be clogged with cars. Any electric trains will be motionless. And the Mayor may just institute a curfew to help restore order.

So why not pack up your bug out bags and rent a room in a hotel out side the city limits. This could still be close enough for you to drive to work but far enough for you to have access to relativly unclogged roads. It's certainly not a cure all, but it does better your odds by a whole bunch.

Answers

I have noticed two views from the GIs here.

1. All things stop at midnight 12-31-99

2. Society falls apart a few months down the road. When supplies and blackouts cause shortages.

I am prepared for no.1 but believe that no.2 will occur.

I believe no. 2 is more likely, but does one want to "bet their life" on 1?

Myself, I'm betting a 1 in 60 chance the lights go out. But you can bet I'm preparing for it regardless. I think it's more like 50/50 we get a depression.

Gee, that was confusing, wasn't it? What I meant to say it that 2 is more likely (and plenty bad enough), but I can't bet my family's safety on it. Sorry.

I share the view that 2 is more likely, but that 1 should not be overlooked.

eyes_open, I'll see your - rent a room outside the city - and raise you one: rent a room in another sector of the power grid, if it's a practical option.

In my case, living in suburban area bordering a rural area supplied by a different power company, it happens to be a practical option. For the nieces that I mentioned in a similar thread in TB2K Classic, both the city and the small town are served by the same power company. Oh well.

BigDog,

We knew what you meant, but we are happy to see that you also knew what you meant. :-)

In case I wasn't clear...

The "rent a room" stratagy let's you go to work but allows you to pick your starting point in case it becomes bug-out time. If your going to run a foot race do you start next to the well or at the bottom of it? Getting OUT of the city could be alot tougher than getting AWAY from the city.
