Tourney autofire Question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

1. Is autofire acceptable for tourney play or not? I know i can do significantly better on 2020bb with autofire allowed to help run the bases. It's a hard thing to prove, but it looks like the high gyrus recordings use autofire (i apologize if you guys are just insanely fast and staminatious with the wrists.)

2. Should these questions be posed to Pat directly or will pat read this thread?

I can't speak for the 2nd place Gyruss score but my recording was done using a MS Natural keyboard with no autofire. Unless I can get my Sidewinder gamepad working better all my recordings will be made using keyboard. I guess that means I'm insanely fast and staminatious with my firing. ;-)

My personal opinion is that no auto-fire should be allowed.

actually for some reason i wasn't able to download the 1rst place, so you're not necesarily fast and staminations (yet :) I don't mind either way; it is good for the people who are developing carpel tunnel to have autofire, and good for the people who don't to not. Just as long as everyone is playing with the same (dis)advantages.

I can guarantee you I can do a lot better in Galaga, even though it is not my game, if I had autofire, my wrists were tired after continuing after tapping on the CTRL (default MAME32 key for shooting). QUESTION: How in the heck do you make the autofire happen in MAME...

1. Autofire is not allowed

2. I read ALL the threads

P.S. If anyone suspects funny stuff with autofire and wants to challenge a recording, just bring it to my attention.

Agreed, autofire is not allowed in all games of this tournament.

Also note: maybe autofire should be allowed in some future games that aren't made incredibly by allowing it. i believe autofire may increase the number of players to enter the tournament, since a lot of people that have played video games or have typed for decades can not bang on a button hundreds of times per minute for hours, but they could hold down the button a few times per minute. I think this might be close to discrimination against people who have mangled hand muscles. I'm sure people who don't experience any pain from excessive typing or playing are going to say this is bullshit, but it's not.

I think there is an internal mame feature for autofire which can be used with the keyboard, but it may be in the development stages or in another version of mame (kbmame); i use a decent digital joystick on it's last leg which has an on/off autofire switches.

NotMan here! I did not use autofire on Gyruss recording! I use arcade stick similar to Hot Rod stick cause keyboard and gamepad doesn't make me real feel like playing the real arcade! So the recording I played it on almost identical to the arcade that I played in past! If I used autofire and I would have wipe out all the enemies and get super bonus points before I reach Mars! I could've have racked up over 3 million pts!

Personally, I have to agree with BeeJay about banning autofire!

Super bonus before Mars......... is there some secret bonus feature in Gyruss that I've never discovered in all these years of playing?

As for CTS/RSI/OOS or whatever you want to call it. Remember that it's not so much solely repetition of movements that causes these problems but rather the strain of holding the fingers/hands in the one position until you use them. Some studies have actually shown that permanently having the muscles tensed (as holding an autofire button down would require) can actually be worse than repeatedly pressing the keys. (That's partly the reason they dropped the RSI definition for this problem.)

That said, while I do suffer the effects of OOS after long periods of typing on the keyboard - like after an 8 hour day of programming at work - I seldom if ever have the same problem with playing Mame and have never had a problem when using a real arcade machine. Not even when I played Bomb Jack for 24 hours. Unfortunately that was not on TG settings so my 70 million does not count for the book - that and the fact that I didn't know about TG back then so I didn't have an independent judge available to verify the score either. :-(
