NO EXPECTATIONS -- NO DISAPOINTMENTS

Don't hold your breath expecting to see real evidence of Y2K come July the First. In my oppinion there won't be any. The big spin is on, and if they have to turn it up they will, but believe me we will not see anything to hang our hats on. But "Oh" don't we wish there would be something for us to be able to say "See this Y2K thing is going to be a little more than just a three day ice storm"

It will be interesting for some of us who are aware of the "spin" to watch the "spinmasters" do their thing.

Think of it. It's July 6th. You're a senior manager in a state government bureaucracy where the new fiscal 2000 is fouling up your operation. Here are your options:

A) Make the programmers work evenings and weekends until the problem is solved, if that's even possible. In the meantime, you lie, lie, lie, and try to keep a lid on things as well as you can. Try extraordinary stopgap measures. Maybe you just keep running last month's tape, or you intentionally refrain from closing out fiscal 1999 for months. Cross your fingers and hope it all holds together. You tell your higher-ups the truth, and they tell you to keep this as quiet as possible. The governor makes it clear that the name of the game is "Play Along; Get Along." Going public will ruin your career. (It hasn't occured to you that you won't have a career in six months, anyway.)

or

B) You call the biggest newspaper in your state and grant an interview to them wherein you spill all the beans. "We're screwed. The state government will probably dissolve next year. Withdraw your money now. Stop paying taxes, since it won't matter anyway. Buy beans and rice, MREs, and a generator."

Yeah, right. This will only leak out when the consequences are so spectacular they can't be covered up. In the meantime, it's business as usual.
