vet meds

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My husband is a chronic asthmatic and frequently takes antibiotics and prednisolone. At a pinch I would like to store some vet meds for him. Any brand names? I've heard both bovine and fish antibiotics are good. Any help is appreciated.

Why not just stock up on the human meds? Steroids are dirt cheap as is ampicillin, sulfa drugs etc. Wouldn't go for the animal meds except in a dire emergency? There are some interesting reports on colloidal silver. Lastly, prevention is worth a pound of cure. Find a way to avoid the allergens triggering the response. A good HEPA filter in the bedroom is worth $$$$$ more than antibiotics.

Thanks for the info. Trying to get meds here in Australia is like pulling teeth. He gets them prescribed one at a time and the doc (although been treated him for years) is reluctant to hand over more prescriptions. If he changes doctors, that in itself creates the problems opf havign to go through the hoops again. He is on Losec for Hiatus Hernia and if he fronts up to another doctor, chances are they'll snd him to have another gastroscope. He is slowly getting a few bottles extra here and there, but I wanted to get a little vet antibiotics, just in case. I also periodically have an abcess behind my ear give me trouble from time to time, and while controlled by antibiotics it really requires surgery. Here in Australia waiting lists for non-urgent surgery is months sometimes in excess of 18 months. Like I say I just want a little as a backup. Thanks

Pauline- years ago, when i worked for a vet, we routinely "treated" ourselves with basic antibiotics and stuff that was intended for animals- still alive and kicking today. So.....I would figure that basic tetracycline, penicillin, etc is just fine- also stuff like Bag Balm, etc- also intended for animals, works great on humans.

I would stay away from the tropical fish stuff though- go with livestock meds- intended for animals to be consumed by people, and some dog/cat meds as well.

I haven't played Doctor for over half a century, but respect the effort and personal stamina of others who have been forced to do so in "less than ideal" circumstances. Assuming certain unindoctrinated common folk are forced to resort to self administration, or equal, is there any info available for those people to determine (example) how much penicillan of 300,000 units to administer orally or via injection to a 50# child with a severe ear infection? No, it's not the preferred action, but given no alternative, what's the answer?

A Hambley, here is a general rule of thum.....

Adult tab of pen- 500mg 3X daily inj of pen- 2cc on the first day and 1 cc every other day for one wk. example: Monday 2cc, Wednesday 1 cc, Friday 1 cc, Sun 1 cc

Child (50#) tab of pen- (break open a 500mg) Divide it up into 3 equal doses. then mix the meds with jello or jelly to get them to take it. inj of pen- 1/2 cc on the first day, 1/4 cc every other day for a wk.

My best advise is..... try to get a neighboor who is a nurse or has some expertize to help you. I am sure they will be more than glad to expecally if you bring a little food for them.

I have been raising dogs for many years, animal med is the exact same as human meds. My vet has on many occasions called in a perscription to my local pharmacy for my dogs. When I compare the pills of human Amoxicillan to dog Amoxicillan, they are the same.

Also.... the best antibotic you can get is "Ceclore". It is a good broad spectrim antibotic that is strong. Use wisely.

I have stocked up on antibotics as I think they will be worth thier weight in gold. I have 1000 of Amoxicillan, and 500 of Ceclore and 1000 of a couple of others. If I dont need them next year then that will be a small amount of money I have lost, small amount compared to the peace of mind it gives me knowing I have them for family and friends.

As an alternative approach to ear infections, my first two were plagued, and we were ready to have tubes put in #2's ears. Then I heard an MD on the radio suggest cod liver oil. Guess what? It worked. Out of seven kids, one more down the road got an ear infection, but I didn't catch the early warning signs, so went ahead with antibiotics...but then put him on cod liver oil capsules, and no more. I am planning to have both alternatives, herbal/holistic and some Rx.
