This strange plant/fungus(?) appeared in a Ponderosa Pine forest in New Mexico about 3 months after a major forest fire. Anybody know what it is?

This strange plant/fungus(?) appeared in a Ponderosa Pine forest in New Mexico about 3 months after a major forest fire. Anybody know what it is?

I forgot that there is nothing here to indicate the scale. This miniature tree is about 4" tall. It was the only thing I saw alive within at least a thousand foot radius.
