How to convert AVI to MPEG

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have just installed All-in-wonder Pro, and it seems like it only allows me to record to the following five formats: ATI Packed YUV Data, YVU9 Planar (Indeo Raw), YVU12 Planar (MPEG Raw), ATI VCR 1.0, and ATI VCR 2.0. The results of all these five formats give me all .AVI files, which I cannot convert successfully into .MPEG using the program "avi2mpeg". Some of them do convert, but when I try to play them, media player doesn't support the format and it doesn't play.

Does anyone know how I can record straight into .MPEG instead of .AVI? and if that is not possible, how do i convert successfully from .AVI into .MPEG so I can make VCD?

Thank you.

Josh

Your two choices: AVI->MPEG use XingMPEG Encoder or straight to MPEG use Dazzle, Snazzi, Broadway, Matrox MII, etc.

quicktime 6.0 pro will convert avi to mpeg4 it will also convert them to other file types, just open the file you want to convert and hit export in the file menu, i havent had any problems with it so far

Dazzle's Moviestar 5 allows you to record straight into many formats, including MPEG1 & 2. Unfortunately MPEG3 & 4 are not supported.

There is another product called Cinema Craft SP 2.66.01.07 which is super fast, rendering the whole 700+ mb AVI movie to 1.1+ GB MPG in less than 1 hr. However, read the manual before using it as the resulting movie may render in weird sizes, so that when written to a CD, the movie will appear in the top right corner instead of the whole screen (www.cinemacraft.com). I still use TMPGEnc 2.510.49.157 as it is the most reliable program. The downfall is that it does take about 8hrs to render the movie. The good thing about it is that you can create a custom movie size if the aspect ratio is all messed up in the AVI file (http://www.tmpgenc.net/)

The conversion will allways take a long time due to the fact that it is slowed by pc processor not the program! i hope this provides some insight!!!
