Polly's are actually Super Doomers?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Interesting how the "Doomers" promote preparedness and the "Pollys" promote inaction. If I wanted to cause a huge, last minute panic I would tell the masses "All is ok, don't get ready, its not a problem...". Then, when it hits, it hits BIG. Why else would someone spend so much of their precious time telling people NOT to get ready? Why would anyone care if others were preparing unless it was undermining their own agendas?

No "conspiracy crap" here, it doesn't warrant going that far. But something is wrong with the persistence of the Polly group to try and convince people not to do something.

Could there be another motive?

I think some so called Pollys are worried about a self-fufilling prohpecy so they figure that the best couse of action is inaction. (Ya know, "leave that can of worms unopened") They are probably the same people who think Americans can't make up their own mind, or worse, when they do make up their own mind they always make the wrong choices. I think it shows a tremendous lack of foresight. And maybe, just maybe, it goes to show you that some people are so worried about looking foolish they will deny anything bad is happening (ala Titanic) right up to the very bitter end.

Actually, in all fairness, I think I should qualify that statement. Some so called Pollys might actually believe that there will be some disruptions but they are too worried about the aforementioned self fufilling prophecies that they are unwilling to admit to their reality. I think this is the case for alot of newbies who are not computer literate and are anxious to make up their minds one way or another.

There are NO pollys.

At least not on these lists.

Any REAL pollys - at this late date - would have long ago gotten bored with the subject because they long ago concluded that it was all hype. Or it is already fixed. They are "out there".. but would not be frequenting Y2K lists at this late date.

Any so-called pollys on the lists fall into one of two groups:

1) Doomers in the "The only thing to fear is fear itself" crowd - i.e. the panic will kill us long before Y2K does.

2) Those with a vested interest in smudging, fudging, obfuscating and otherwise muddying the waters in order to keep things rolling along "situation normal" for as long as possible. Actually, I guess this is a subgroup of (1).

Not only that, but there are NO doomers.

For if you really expected the worst, why prepare (except spiritually perhaps). The fact that we frequent these lists looking for news, looking for preparation tips, means we have hope. A will to survive. Survivalists are by definition pollys. NO ONE doesn't want to survive... only SOME are ingnorant of the risks to that survival.

IMHO... of course.

Linda, your intelligent analysis has been badly needed around here lately. You said it short and sweet. Congratulations

...Good question, good comments. Also, what I've noticed is this. Most people (sheeple) sincerely want to believe their government leaders when said government says "everything should be OK except for some 'minor' glitches". Most people trust the Dan Rathers, the Peter Jennings and the Tom Brokaws because .... well ... they're so well- respected and surely these established bastions wouldn't mislead us. Would they? Why would they lie? Most people don't understand that there are powerful political, financial, legal and other intangible forces that militate against the interest of the individual and his/her family where the interests of the government, business and the press are concerned.

Most people haven't figured out yet that governments (probably most governments today) are more concerned with the financial markets and the politics of the next election or even the day to day politics than whether or not the public is given enough of the straight facts so that they can decide what level of preparation is comfortable to them. Consequently, when they hear from folks like you and me that they need to prepare, they have no framework to process the information. It just doesn't make sense to people that all the press and Bill Clinton and Peter Jennings would be lying to them. Besides, if Y2K was a bonifide problem, wouldn't they be reading about it in their local newspaper. But God says (I'm paraphrasing): because the love of Truth was not in them and that they regard not the truth that He will send a delusion that they would believe a lie. The people perish because they do not regard the truth.

LOL! Who said comedy was dead? Have you perhaps not read some of the vile "I for one hope the world ends so we can (insert religious blather)".

I realize that I am not going to change the deranged mind of one single Doomer, however it is an amusing pastime, watching your Cult of Death slowly expire...

Actually, both the position of the "pollys" and end of the world variety "doomers" results in paralysis. One extreme plugs its ears and sing-songs "la, la, la - I can't hear you." The other, wrings its hands and gnashes its teeth in hopelessness.

The true optomist lies in between. These are the group who see, hear and recognize potential difficulties in the future, feel that they can effect the impact of those difficulties on themselves and their families and take proactive steps to mitigate that impact.

So where does that leave y2k pro?

Would his recent lobotomy have anything to do with his comings and goings on this forum?

I think we should be told.

Hallyx - "The basis of optimism is sheer terror."---Oscar Wilde

I LIKE that... a LOT!!! Sounds like a great motto for us doomer/polly/whatevers.

And as for Y2Kpro's lobotomy... we've got more to do than to worry about him/her. Its way to late to be worrying about such nonsense.
