I would be curious as to those of us living up here in the Seattle area, and what you are hearing about Y2K up here.

I am in the north Bothell area, and not really ties into any sources of facts, rumors, or "did-ja-know"'s.

FYI

My husband is a King County Sheriff's deputy. No vacation time allowed after Nov. 1. Office of Emergency Preparedness will be manned from the time Y2K hits New Zealand (think they are counting on CNN coverage for info to a degree.) They are really worried about the World Trade Conference to be held in Seattle first week of December.

National Guard is on duty over the roll over - he got out after 36 years.

Puget Power says they are compliant, but can't really "island" off the grid because they only produce 32% of their own power and some of that comes from Canadian sources. This from my neighbor who is a supervisor at PP. My neighbor sells hospital equipment (monitoring machines, incubators etc. and he says no way do you want to be in a hospital on roll over from what he has heard around the hospitals. that hasn't changed since he told us that in Feb. All in all -should be interesting.

Could you Washingtonians please advise any potential for shipping problems via the docks? Most of Alaska is dependent upon those docks, and conceiveably a small problem there could spell disaster here. Thanks.

Snohomish/Skagit (sort of Seattle area, North). Not one peep from the Mayor's, County Commissioners, 2-3 day preps from our esteemed emergency management dept., same old, same old. I have been able to individually help people GI, watched the light go on in my hairdressers eyes here in town, she said "nobody ever explained it", she figured it was just easy to fix, local stuff. Now she is thinking about how to get around to hair appointments on her bicycle. Wish they would let us know what is happening, have tried to call various city departments & utilities, just get happy face, don't worry, be happy, all is well in Washington Land! NOT

Marymoor Park (or anywhere else in the Greater Seattle area) works for us. Heck, we'll go as far north as Anacortes or as far south as Tacoma to meet everybody.

I haven't checked with any local officials on the Eastside. Anecdotally, a couple of checkout people at Costco have commented on my "obviously Y2K" purchases, and say they see lots of people stocking up.

Hydro-electric power plants are usually much simpler (and often older) than other types of power plants; they rarely have DCS (distributed control systems), which tend to be the main Y2K-related culprits in power plants. Seattle Light has supposedly remediated its SCADA system; there are few serious Y2K problems in T&D (transmission and distribution) systems. So, if nothing else, electric power looks good for the Seattle area.

I heard yesterday that Costco is now nicknamed "Y2kmart".

We're relatively a little safer here because the hydro power is simpler, but we share distribution risks common to all grids.

Kitsap prep is taken a little more seriously, and the Kitsap emergency management people are pushing Y2k pretty hard. Stressing self sufficiency for folks on peninsulas, islands.

Many of us ride ferries, which is sort of like being in a community living room every day for half an hour. Lets us compare notes and get the pulse of the community. Lots of Y2k aware folks, is my impression.

We took an early hit here. January 2 Supercuts POS systems were down from a 99 bug. I'd already passed out awareness brochures (last year) to all the staff there, but BOY, did they pay attention in the Factoria store when I got a haircut on the 2d! Luckily, they got the system fixed again, and we remain coiffed.

Yeah, ferry is iffy. I have accommodations on either side of the water, if needed.
