Any advice?

Is there anyway to control (hopefully get rid of...) fleas & ticks on your property? Also any other ideas/advice on ticks in general?

Answers

Guinea fowl eat the ticks. Some Long Islanders use them to control deer ticks, and thus Lyme disease, which is a big problem on L.I.

I would try these remedies in this order:

1. Gineas (sp?) the eat ticks

2. Sulphur

3. 100% pavement

4. General Sherman's methods

BiGG:

If you're not adverse to using chemicals, Sevin Dust works extremely well to get rid of these pests.

I second the use of Sevin. Very effective. Comes in liquid, too, so mixing in small 'pump-it-up' sprayer is possible. I have even used the wetable powder in sprayer solution. Go with chemicals....Lyme disease is no treat.

Fake,

Are you in/on Log Island now? Do you plan to be there @rollover?

-- Mike (midwestmike_@hotmail.com), June 24, 1999.

I am at work in NYC at this minute. I spend a total of 3 days in city/4 days at home on Long Island. I hope to be home at rollover. (I live in a very rural/agriculture area about 100 miles from NYC.) But my employer is requiring my department to be at work for the rollover. I am the only one in my dept who is upset/concerned about this. Are you in the NYC area? fake

Whoops! Looks like you're from the Midwest, Mike. Sorry fake

I asume you have dogs and cats. If you put them on Frontline, your problem should clear up quickly. The fleas and ticks keep jumping on the animals and they die - fast. Soon - no more fleas and ticks! In addition, you may want to try using diatamaceous earth on the ground.

I live in NYC, fake. I feel safer in my apartment on the 10th floor than on the groumd.

Two words for you, fire ants. They'll also get rid of those pesky quail and other ground nesting animals. On second thought, go with the sevin dust.

Mara, Will you stay in town on the rollover?

1st advice - good topic.

2nd advice - "Any advice?" is NOT a good lead-in for a topic unless you want it to get buried in the archives never to be seen again!

3rd advice -

Non-toxic pest control

Another option for the dogs/cats is "top spot". This is a liquid applied to the animal between the fron shoulders. I also use a serious flea/tick bomb in the house. Outdoors is more difficult, because ticks are often well above ground level, and may live for many years waiting for a host.

fake, I am pondering where I will be. My sister and I might go to a gated community in a fairly isolated part of Florida or I might stay here. But it's gonna be cold here.I don't think that will be pleasant. Frankly, none of this is pleasant. So maybe we do our best on the beach...hmm, does that remind you of Nevil Shute's novel, ON THE BEACH about...oh my goodness, the end of the world. I think people kill themselves in that book--only since death (from radiation) is inevitable.

Mara: Florida sounds best. I have GI friends who are in a gated community in Sarasota. But they also have a bugout motor home and an RV site about 45 miutes to the south. NYC could be no picnic. And I wonder if the city will continue with the insanity of the Times Square ball-dropping event on New Year's Eve. It's bad enough that I have to be at work that night. It's worse that my office is just a few blocks away from Times Square. Speaking of which. It's late. I'm at the office. And I'm going home. I'm outta here...

nematodes can be purchased thru realgoods.com they apparently eat flea eggs and many other types of "bad" bugs (grubs and stuff).

-- sarah (qubr@aol.com), June 25, 1999.

fake,

Oh the Times Square thing, yes, but...that will go away. The worst thing about NYC will be the cold. But if your building is heated by oil, maybe it will be okay for a while. These buildings where I live are heated with steam directly from Con Edison, God bless them. Con Ed looks to be fairly okay as these things go. However...

Not that it has anything to do with ticks, but I'd rather be in NYC than some parts of Miami on New Year's Eve. But NYC is not the place to be if you are concerned about Y2K. 72 hours, sure. But that's not concerned.

If you're on this forum and concerned about disruptions lasting longer than 3 days, you need to plan to be somewhere else that weekend.

Now, as far as ticks go, I plan to go with pesticides. If and when I run out of those, I'll live with it. I found a tick imbedded in my hip at my "place" one morning a few weeks ago. It was gross, but you remove it and wash the wound. It heals.
