FOR ALL NEW GIs and LURKERS - Please read

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hello to you and welcome aboard. This site is dedicated to working together to discover and uncover what's afoot regarding Y2K, and to provide helpful information about how do deal with it. Many of the regulars here are seasoned computer veterans who have much insight to on what's happening in the Y2K trenches. On the other hand, we are often blitzkrieged by a small but determined band of what we call "Trolls," whose only pastime seems to be disrupting the forum and trying to discredit anyone who is trying to prepare for Y2K. You will recognize them by their posts, which consist mainly of unbridled attacks against other posters (flames) and/or warmed-over rehashes of the mainstream message of "It's going to be ok, don't worry about Y2K."

To get you up to speed on why we're concerned about Y2K, here's a LINK to a list of documented glitches that have already occurred.

Finally, here's the SITE at which the Institution of Electrical Engineers has posted its casebook of problems that have already occurred.

Again, welcome aboard.

Who said comedy was dead? Sandman is another engineer on the Train of Fear - booga, booga the world is gonna end. If you are new to this asylum, learn to laugh at the so called "GIs" (Goofy Indigents)

Newbies, most of the populace of this forum are marginal human beings, hoping for the end of the world. You have nothing to learn from them except paranoia, fear and hatred. You have stumbled on a Web site for the mentally ill - be warned!.

"So, of course I want to see y2k bring down the system, all over the world. I have hoped for this all of my adult life." -- Gary North

Moderators:

Please "Out" Y2k Pro.

Who is he really and why is he posting here?

-- Out him (it's@time.finally), June 23, 1999.

Hey, Pro! You're known by the company you keep! :-) "What a maroon"... courtesy of Bugs Bunny! :-) Sandmann, just one problem... if they are new to Y2K, they may not know what a "GI" is.

Thanks!

Well, newbies, you have just run head-on into our troll problem, personified by Y2K Pro. The statement "most of the populace of this forum are marginal human beings hoping for the end of the world" is a total lie, as you will discover for yourself if you stick around.

Peter,

You are right..."Pro"? according to his opinions, appears to live in a very small world. Remind you of the PUNK in every room that nobody seems to like? They usually have a big problem within and can't grasp what everyone else sees.

Gayla,

If you keep it up, I just might open that HTML 4 book I picked up at Ollie's for $7.99.

Hey Y2K Pro,

Sorry, I'm in the mood tonignt. SCREW YOU! <:)=

Being the lazy sot I am, KEVIN:

Can you put together a link set that has all of the What About ME threads?? for this thread??

To All;

Ok Guys.. lets take up the challenge in a general way.. y2K Pro Ha Says were all marginal human beings. I resent his insult more than his stand as a polly on y2K. Let's put a brief consnsus of what kind of people we are without giving too much detail to help convince new people we are of main stream and Y2K literate,, not a bunch of radicals. I am a computer programmer since 1975 to present, college educated in information systems magna cum laude, married with 2 kids both grown now and out (empty nest). I have a house, two cars and investmensts like every one else. I have worked for banks, the media, Insurance companies, and the government as a Computer Operator, Programmer, Programmer/Analyst, Systems Analyst and other things. I remeber in 1980 joking with fellow programmers about not being in this business come 2000. Well I believe I am pretty normal, and have a fairly good insight into things, and I have been making preparations for a couple of years now. I would suggest to any new person reading this forum that they don't listen to guys like Y2K pro. We are a bunch of normal concerned people who are trying to share information on a complex social/technical dilemma to help our families and each other prepare. Many are computer programmers or at least computer lieterate (as evidenced by thier presence here and insightful comments) and as such have a better feeling for this than the general public. This can be a site for useful information and preparetory information if that is what you seek. Slammer

Y2K Prozac,

See Prozac boot his "mac"...

See Prozac expertly navigate with the mouse...

Ooooooh, he is SOOOO good resizing windows!

Your MacIntosh is so cooooool you must be the envy of all the 4th graders...

Rick- :-) Most of the HTML tricks I've learned just by hanging around here!

At least that's ONE good thing about this place! :-)

Well, here's what I said in my original post:

On the other hand, we are often blitzkrieged by a small but determined band of what we call "Trolls," whose only pastime seems to be disrupting the forum and trying to discredit anyone who is trying to prepare for Y2K. You will recognize them by their posts, which consist mainly of unbridled attacks against other posters (flames) and/or warmed-over rehashes of the mainstream message of "It's going to be ok, don't worry about Y2K."

Y2KPro, or so he calls himself, is the Head Troll (some of the regulars here may feel that honor belongs to one of the other Trolls), but he has never to my knowledge contributed anything to this forum.

My advice to you is stay frosty, keep coming back, and you'll find out who really knows what's going on with Y2K. Pay attention to Sysman, Big Dog, some of the others. Stan Faryna has has an excellent post on preps and priorities. :o)

Slammer... Married 21 years, seven kids (one grown), husband is GI (get it) electrical engineer. Oh bother, not sure how "normal" we are though....but we certainly do not WANT things to disintegrate because of Y2K, we do not WANT the infrastructure to be compromised...we do not WANT to leave dear friends behind... BUT we do not WANT to put our children at RISK because we are too addicted to the "comfort zone" to make changes. So yes, we are willing to disrupt our plans and our lives in general. We don't believe in the magical "They" either (as in "they" will fix it/take care of it etc.) I guess it is all about what you are willing to risk. The doomers laugh, but all we risk by preparing is egg on the face, not our lives. And hey, that is one omelette I'd love to have!

-- Mumsie (Lotsakids@home.com), June 25, 1999.

Of course, meant the polly's laugh... no aspersion on GI humor, as evidenced in many posts...

Both wife and I are RNs total 30 years medical experience. Have extensive business education (incl. MBA) Kids grown. Home in country in SC. Own and operate a home health agency. Have boucoup dogs and cats, 4 horses, an ostrich, potbelly pig and a parrot that runs everything. Am preparing for a 7 or 8 and hope that I look foolish in February 2000.

These are mostly good folks. Don't let the trolls scare you off.
