greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Would someone with more knowledge of computers, (whose name I recognize) and with a real email address posted please help here? The following BS was posted by Y2K Pro... al-d ip #206.150.201.44 Mumsies ip #206.150.201.44

-- Y2K Pro (2@641.com), June 23, 1999.

Do the moderators have the real info on this? Thanks.

Really? Skim to the bottom of this thread and explain please... http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000zED

Seems that anyone can post using any name. This will be a case of 'did not 'did too'. Is it really that important?

Mumsie,

I'll get the team in gear to look.

An IP Address doesn't necessarily mean a hill of beans anyway. First of all, I doubt whether the Server has been set up to capture IP addresses and secondly, if the users ISP is using DHCP it is impossible to finger the exact user anyway.....in this case the IP addresses are dynamic and assigned at login to a user as opposed to an IP address belonging to one particular user.

Either way, as I said on a previous post, even if the Server were capturing IP addresses and DHCP was not being used by the ISP, there is no way for a user to get the details that would be stored on the greenspun server anyway........

Mumsies and al-d the same person! Ha Ha Ha Who cares?????? Do you think you are that important that everyone will gasp in disbelief that Mumsies is being flamed. Get real. Hey Diane, how does the gang feel about you getting them in gear? Can't they shift on their own?

-- Gottca (knewit@allalong.net), June 23, 1999.

Hmmm...I guess it doesn't seem important when it happens to someone else. Let's say that I want to initiate private correspondence over a certain topic, do you not think that credibility factors in? Also, I responded to Y2K Pro's lie only after I saw it had created doubt (e.g. Gayle Dunbar). Diane is giving a considerate reaction, and thank you Diane! (Also thank you Craig, computer guru!) Do I think I am so "important"? Not in the way you seem to imply, but important enough to maintain my own identity, ...yes and thank you. There is a philosophy that only the big things and/or the big picture counts. This logic, when carried out, can have ugly ramifications at times. Similar to the end justifies the means.

Just happen to be the first Forum Moderator on the scene thats all. And trying to help. Got a problem with that?

Mumsie, Y2K Pro DID NOT post that, nor is the ISP correct for you or al-d, and they are not one in the same number. (Now that doesnt mean that Y2K Pros not a bender of truth at times).

;-D

BTW, If anyone wants to understand how the Greenspun software, developed at MIT, works, there is a link at the bottom of the top level Forum page...

If you're interested in how this software evolved and/or want to learn how to build similar systems yourself, then you should read Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing.

Havent even read it yet myself.

*Sigh*

You can try e-mailing Phil Greenspun, but his standard answer is usually the same... isnt it just like a professor to tell ya to go read the book.

I assume the moderators can prove that I did not take part in that thread - because I did not. Posting someones IP address is not, IMO, part of the game...

-- Y2K Pro (2@641.com), June 23, 1999.

Not the moderators, Y2K Pro: the mods have to go to the sysops for the IP data, which is being recorded. Has been forever, and I believe one troll was actually TOS'ed six months or so ago.

To the real Y2K Pro, my apologies for for calling "you" a big liar! As I wrote to Diane, I don't mind being flamed, just prefer to keep my own identity.

-- Mumsie (Lotsakids@home.com), June 23, 1999.

Well you should use your real e-mail address and quit the bs. Let's get back to reality, who gives a shit if Y2K Pro is Mummsie or not. I'm here for information to survive.

-- Daryll (twinck@wfeca.net), June 23, 1999.

Mumsie, Get a life.

-- Mumsie2 (yeah@right.net), June 23, 1999.

Mumsie, I can understand your frustration. I've had another person use my name before. There is a lot more of that going on these days than there was in the past. On the other thread when I said I thought al-d was someone else, I was not referring to you. Al-d is playing a game with the people on this forum. He knows exactly what he is doing. The poor grammar and typing are a cover.
