Story in Waco Tribune-Herald Tues. June 22, 1999 by Mike Copeland

Texas Gov. George W. Bush, a presidential candidate, is looking at land in McLennan County on which to build a personal getaway spot, sources tell the Tribune-Herald.

The site reportedly covers "several hundred acres" near the community of Crawford in the western part of the county an area of oak trees, creeks that feed the Middle Bosque River and old ranches.

"I know he has a bid in on it," said state Sen. David Sibley, R-Waco, who dined with Bush and his wife, Laura, in Austin on Saturday evening. "I think the deal is contingent upon his being able to build a lake that would hold water. He's waiting for an engineer's assessment. He's an avid fisherman, so I'm sure there would be some trophy bass in that lake someday."

"Laura Bush asked for the names of some home builders," added Sibley, "so I think they're optimistic."

A spokeswoman for Bush, who was campaigning in South Carolina on Monday, confirmed that the Bushes are looking at land locally but said a sale has not been finalized...(I have left out the rest of the article)

I especially liked the part about building a lake that would hold water. So, what do y'all think? GW Bush, GI?

I think GWB is doing what wealthy Texans have done for over a hundred years....Building him a ranch! Sorry, I think this is a stretch to associate this with Y2K, but maybe......

Hoping GWB 'get's it' is about as hopeful as 'Flint takes a stand'.

I used to visit family in this area a lot when I was a kid. McLennan County sits in the middle of gentle rolling hills and decidious woodlands. The economy of the area is good, the land fertile, the people friendly and the weather temperate (at least compared to the rest of Texas). The roads are good and it's centrally located, making it an easy trip to anywhere else in the state. Hell, if I had GWB's money I might very well do the same thing.

I just wonder if he's hedging his bets and is writing to Pueblo, Colorado for, asking for the free government publication:

The Secret Service's Helpful Homebuilding Tips

I particularly fond of chapter 43: "Where to put your helipad and/or runway."
