G8 Leaders Agree On Y2K Awareness Drive

COLOGNE, Germany (Reuters) - The big power Group of Eight leaders agreed Saturday to go on a drive to raise public awareness of the millennium bug, which threatens to bring some computer systems to a halt at the turn of the year.

``The leaders will to a much greater extent be drawing attention to millennium problems in all press conferences,'' Klaus Gretschmann, chief economic adviser to German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, told reporters during a two-day summit meeting in Cologne.

It was clear that while some countries were well prepared to cope with the bug, others were not, he said.

``The United States and Britain are leading in this area. Some have not done enough,'' Gretschmann said.

Shortcuts made to save memory space in the early days of computers mean that many programs only have space to insert the last two digits of the year. A shift to the year 2000 would thus be read by old programs as 1900, causing a malfunction.

Gretschmann said that increasingly now attention would be paid to contingency plans in the event that something did go wrong. One area for attention would be the safety of nuclear power plants in eastern Europe, he added.

The Group of Eight comprises Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.

Preparing For Y2K - (FRANKFORT) -- Many are getting a free lesson in preparing for the ``Y-two-K'' computer bug and any problems it could bring. Several topics have been addressed during a day-long ``Y-two-K Summit'' in Frankfort. The state-sponsored the event. Businesses, schools, and state agencies all took part. The chairman of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion was the featured speaker. Frankfort is one of the first ten cities for the Washington official to visit.

Why does the term press conferences not inspire me? Or, perhaps theyre setting the stage for next weeks United Nations Y2K meetings.

I sure am glad that they getting started on this in a timely manner. After all, awareness is the first 1%, so then all we have to worry about is the other 99%. We should get done sometime in 2011. Think of what it would be like if they didn't start (we'd probably be ok in late 2010!).

Gee... They're going to work on awareness in September. I guess the inventory will begin in January of 2001.
