SURPRISE! Gun control defeated in the House

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

By a wide margin, the US House of Representatives has defeated hysteria induced gun control legislation.

I for one am heartened but surprised. There may be hope for this republic after all.

Jolly Prez,

As good as it was to see the gun control bill stopped, I disagree about the Republic.

A few minutes after I saw the bill was voted down I see Sen. Ted Kennedy saying how the NRA and the GOP are running the government and they should be stopped. He didn't say that 40% of the Democrats alos voted the proposed bills down.

And then I se Ray "DNC Chairman" Romer on Fox News saying how the Republicans have once again voted in a way that would be benificial to their election platforms. He didn't say anything about the gun control bills we already have that work very well thank you very much.

And then a few minutes later I see another Democratic Senator screaming about how we aren't taking our kids into consideration when it comes to these bills. In my opinion, we are. The FBI already knows too much about me as it is.

So you can see the garbage that is being broadcast to millions of homes worldwide, manipulating the truth to make Republicans look sleazy and make guns look like the work of Satan himself. People will see this stuff and believe it, and soon new gun bills will be passed to register our firearms so Uncle Sam can keep better tabs on us "rebels".

As for me, I'm going to go and renew my membership to the NRA while I still have a few "inalieable rights" left.

Call now and help keep America free... just look what happened in the UK. Even Olympic Sport Shooters were banned from recreational shooting. Stop the madness before we no longer have the ways and means of keeping the USA a free country.

They already are registering gun owners. When BATF forced thousands of FFL holders out of business (using zoneing laws and such) they collected thier paperwork and computerized it. (This about 1995) Now that the Brady law sunsetted they have derceed that rifles and shotguns will also require a back ground check. This is the kind of thing I don't mind except THEY ARE RETAINING RECORDS OF THE BACKGROUND CHECK ON LINE FOR EIGHTEEN MONTHS. So they have a record of who has purchased a firearm. I was originally for the instant background check and didn't mind waiting three of five days to purchase a firearm. But when they turn around and use these measures to illegally start registering gun owners (against 1968 GCA) and add rifles and shotguns by decree, well, now maybe you understand why gun owners balk at these seemingly "reasonable" measures.

But I rant again. Time to read some poetry to the wife. It makes her happy, and that makes me happy. Calm.

Watch six and keep your...

If you like gun control, then call the NRA.

If you don't like gun control and would like to see gun laws rescinded then call Gun Owners of America.

NRA wrote the Brady Bill, and are willing to fight legislators who don't want to eat at the table with gun-grabbers. I wish the hysteria in the media about the NRA was really right; sadly, it is not.

Jim is so very right. The NRA is FOR gun control... it not only wrote the Brady legislation, but INSISTED on the "instant background check" provisions that we are now burdened with. I wouldn't give them a penny. GOA is the way to go.

BTW, if anyone thinks there's nothing wrong with waiting periods and background checks for firearms, I'd like to know how they feel about them as applied to, say, a bookstore? Ideas are ultimately more dangerous than physical weapons, so you shouldn't mind being faced with a wait AND a $15.00 fee every time you want to purchase some 'dangerous' reading material.

I am totally for gun control... but the old saying stands...

"you outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns"

Yes please call the NRA. There is nothing wrong with regulating dangerous weapons. But we now have laws on the books that are sufficient as long as they are enforced. We don't need any more... IMHO.

I'll tell you what was really interesting - the socialists... sorry, democrats, ranted last week in congress and blocked passing legislation that would have restricted the movie industry and video games industry from producing violent content. Why? because it would violate their 1st amendment rights. At the same time they were demanding that congress vote to restrict our 2nd amendment rights!

Now which is it... are the dems for the Constitution or against it? I wish they would make up their minds. Oh yeah, I forgot that hollywood is a big contributor to democratic politics. What was I thinking.

Thanks for leaving absolutely no doubt as to your position. I think we can safely judge the merit of your remarks now.

BTW, if you'd like to post a reply, please take the "moral high ground" and wait five days.

Hawaii has had mandatory gun registration for many years. One reason why I'm not thrilled about gun ownership is that it means that my gun(s) will be confiscated at the first chance..

I wonder if someone could write a computer virus that would only attack registrtion computers when they try to print out a list? Nah, proably too difficult!

-- Mad Monk (madmonk@hawaiian.net), June 18, 1999.

All of those who are concerned about gun registration should keep one thing in mind. It doesn't matter if the govt knows about all of your guns or not. If they even know about one, you're on the s**t list.

If it ever comes down to confiscating guns, you can expect to die. After all, to the best of my knowledge, the Communists, in every country they took over, killed the gun owners. Even after they were disarmed. They were still a threat because they could have stashed some guns, of might have funny ideas about retribution against the govt.

Our "public servants" surely have taken those lessons to heart. Therefore, if you are a gun owner, and even if you gave every gun over, you are quite likely to end up in a "re-education camp", or simply taken out and killed.

Therefore, you might as well resist and take some of the SOBs with you, or bug out and make they pay heavily.

Jesse Ventura said it best..."gun control is putting two bullets through the same hole at 50 feet"!!!!

Above it said....

"And then I se Ray "DNC Chairman" Romer on Fox News saying how the Republicans have once again voted in a way that would be benificial to their election platforms."

Is this not exactly what the knee-jerk democrats are doing, kissing voter butts,(after they whipped them up into a frenzy in the first place)and trying to make it look like they are the saviour of the world?

-- oboy (oboy@oboy.com), June 19, 1999.

OK, 8 years ago you helped Kneejerk Billy get elected and he like Hitler told you what he stood for from the begining. Now on the next election why don't you get off your butts and help get some of these fuzzy thinker out of office. Befor you jump all over me, stop and as, "would the Kosovos been taken out and shot if they could have fough back like the Afgans did?" And now Willy wnts them to give up there guns, If they do they'er crazy as hell. But the good old US will never come to this you say. DDDDDDDD

Here's the final vote on the House gun control bill HR2122 passage. Note that, though the bill failed to pass, 3/5 of the Republicans voted in favor of it, while only 10 Democrats voted for it.

Why is WJC, Gore, and the bulk of the media railing against the House Republicans and the NRA if the majority of them voted for more gun control in the final bill?
