Time-Warner installing gensets

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The electricians are here doing the installation of our 40kw generator. We had to wait in line as they have been doing 50kw installations for the local Time Warner cable company. I would like to know what this means. You would still have to have power for your TV wouldn't you in order to get cable reception? Guess I need to ask these guys doing the work. Taz

They just want to make sure the programmers will have power to fix the computer problems.

You guys are expecting a worse than average hurricane season this year?

As a matter of fact, we are. Dr Gray, in Colorado, the hurricane gurhuu, says its going to be very bad. And the alignment of the planets, etc that is going on is not going to help the situation.

Gotta shelter with genset...BIG ENUFF TO SUPPORT THE NEIGHBORS WITH WATER????

Taz,

My sister was one of the first female "cameramen" in U.S. First with a CBS affiliate for 20+ years. And now with FOX (who bought CBS affiliate out).

Normally she refuses to discuss Y2K. But last summer - she brought it up.

She was VERY puzzled why her station was forced to go digital in such a short period of time and was wondering if it might somehow be Y2K related. (There are very, very few digital TV's out there in the general market to even receive any digital broadcasting.)

Apparently there are a number of major markets that are required ... by government directive ... to broadcast digital by November '99. So ... we got on my computer and did some sleuthing. I can't remember the exact figure - but I think the figure is 8 ... emergency stations on digital. (Maybe it's 6 - I forgot. But it's definitely 6+. Somehow 8 is lodged in my memory bank.)

In any event, the engineers at the station must do BOTH ... Y2K remediation AND switch to digital.

My sister is now stockpiling food, water, etc. The TV station already notified her that all vacations are cancelled in December and January. The TV station will also be stockpiling food, water, bedding, etc.
