Computer Weekly 17 June 1999

The National Computer Centre UK survey of 400 members reveals:

60% of organisations have yet to complete amendment, redevelopment or acquisition of y2k compliant systems

Less than 25% have completed testing

60% have yet to complete discussion with trading partners

70% are developing contingency plans but only 17% have completed them

10% are still conducting the initial assessment of systems

30% do not plan to have an independent review of 2000 readiness

Finance, business services and manufacturing are most prepared, government and education are lagging behind

Its a disaster, the 400 NCC members would represent major organisations in the public and private sector, I doubt whether small companies would join such an organisation.

Pretty dismal performance eh? And England is supposed to be leading the pack along with Canada and the USA - this does not bode at all well, especially coming after Horn's report...

Hello Diane, nice to hear from you again

no-one is preparing (in the art of survival), seems that a lot of y2k projects are over-running (though the silence is deafening), the y2k pundits have suddenly gone quiet (Yourdon, Geunier, De Yager, Hugo), I think we will hear less and less real news on progress, I was surprised to see the results of this survey published (but only contained within the body of a more general report on IT trends)

I would regard it as headline news, it is obvious that many of those 400 major organisations will simply not be ready, they will go on slogging at y2k and lying to the public for as long as they can

Preparing ? Ignoring ? . . .Not really.

Just getting on with it, basically.

If Y2K grew wings, loaded itself up with 500lb incendiary bombs and popped over every night for a year and a half to drop em on us, we'd probably store up some extra teabags, just in case. Till then . . .
