I just don't know of too many 1st world(as opposed to 3rd world) countries that would brag about having a non-modern army. NOw I know New Zealand is a very beautiful place but how are they defending the place, slinghots and bows and arrows?

The New Zealand military is not too worried about the millennium bug since most of its equipment is too old to have computer parts.

Having equipment so old that it has few electronic parts or computer-generated year dates was "a blessing in disguise," Dennis Davidson, the defence force Y2K project office manager, said recently to a New Zealand newspaper.

Five "critical systems" -- three in communications, one in record-keeping and one in the payroll -- might be affected by the programming problem, where computers fail to recognize the year 2000, he said.

But to ensure the military gets paid at the end of the year, defence officials plan to make a triple payout in December to cover pay into the New Year.

Think Switzerland. New Zealand is a 1950's life style and culture, very simple.

From what would we need to defend New Zealand?

Aussies :)

China.

I believe that we have treaty obligations to both New Zealand and Australia under SEATO (Southeast Asian Treaty Organization.

Us 'Aussies' have no reason to swarm over New Zealand.

They're our mates, I'd be proud to fight next to a New Zealander. Go the ANZAC's!

The only thing they are not yet is an official state of Australia. :-)

G'Day Simon. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. ANZACs share a common regard based on shared history.
