Hey Brian, Well I have seen the clean scale go up to C4. the original "clean" sheild rating was C4 and still is pretty close. When Mescalto was done clean it was a very modest C3+. I have done Lunar in Zion clean at C3 but it is hard for clean ratings to go much higher. C5 or A5 really isn't there, what is it? The hardest most extreme thing out there, but there is always something harder. Well I hope this helped if not confused you more, but keep this in mind, C1- Cams, nuts, good hooks, cam hooks, etc. C2- bad nuts, small offsets, brass rps that are loose, but some bomber gear on the pitch. C3- Bad loose hooks, bad fixed gear, two cam aliens that are hard to test (lunar) nothing that great for gear on the pitch just nothing to hit. C4- Just like C3 just bad landings and just as hard as you can push before your knees bukle and you nail, it's ok though!!! Happy off-setting! Burt

I don't know of an example but it's certainly conceivable to have a C5 pitch that is entirely scary hook placements with a fall onto a ledge or the ground. I suppose hard hooking pitches usually have a bashie or rurp somewhere which makes them A5.
