HAMILTON, ON, June 14 /CNW-PRN/ - Hamilton, Ontario plays host to the internationally recognized World Conference on Disaster Management (WCDM) from June 20-23, 1999. The 9th annual conference will attract more than 700 delegates and present over 50 educational sessions featuring top international experts as speakers. The 1999 conference is planned around the fields of Y2K, Emergency Health Care, Emergency Response, and Business Continuity.

This year's prominent speakers include:

- Dr Jay Levinson, Israeli State Police and Interpol, speaking on ``Teotwawki - The End of the World as We Know It - Y2K in Jerusalem''

- Todd Davison, Director, Mitigation Division, FEMA, speaking on ``Y2K - Will the US Be Ready?''

- Dr. John Butt, Chief Medical Examiner for Nova Scotia, speaking on ``Swissair 111 - Handling Casualty Remains''

``Never have the private and public sectors been so closely dependent on each other for the exchange of information and the WCDM is certainly one of the best opportunities to share concepts on all aspects of emergency preparedness'' -- Brian Miller, Chairman of the Board of Directors for CCEP.

A special press conference is scheduled for Monday, June 21, 1999 from 11:30am to 12:00 noon at Conference Headquarters at the Hamilton Convention Centre. In addition, the Media is invited to attend any sessions and events throughout the conference.

The WCDM, held each year in Hamilton, is hosted by the Canadian Centre for Emergency Preparedness (CCEP). The CCEP's mandate is to offer training programs to assist business, industry and government to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from any kind of man-made or natural disaster.

Hamilton is approximately 50 miles southwest of Toronto, on the farthest west tip of Lake Ontario. I take it that it would be a bit too much of a drive to try and become an interested observer.

Meanwhile, Kingston is fourteen miles south of Fourteen Mile Lake, where I spent an enjoyable vacation a few years back. Daily life in a cabin there seems like what I expect Y2K to provide us with, if we're lucky. If only the fishing would be as good...
