As yet unidentified butterfly taken in new Zealand. Nikon 105 Micro, Fuji Velvia, 1:1 magnification. Didn't notice the hotspot at the time. doh!! My first attempt at posting and working with scanned images so hope it works. I know it is a little big to view but if you select full scrren view on your browser it fits nicely.

Hi Andrei,

The diagonal element is perfect, and the critter appears sharp. Nice stuff.

The only problem is it's "bullseyed", right in the center of the frame. A more asymetrical composition would help (I'm not going to say "rule of thirds" because it's too easy of a copout).

Of course that's only really a problem if you print if full frame. You'll probably use a standard 8x10 proportion crop,in which case it won't be bulls-eyed any more.

But when you get to the point where you want to market your images, photo buyers will see the full slide, and in that case a composition that doesn't require cropping for maximum impact will help you.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers,

keith

Another very nice butterfly shot. The soft background, with the minor exception of the horizontal bright band, works very well, as does the diagonal perch. The butterfuly itself is well taken. Good work!

Jason, very nice exposure and dof of this butterfly. You really did well to capture all the detail. The orientation of the butterfly is interesting as well, but one thing bother's me; the perch, it doesn't look quite natural. Otherwise, very nice image! Donna

No unethical macro work I can assure you. This was how it was. There was a very slight amount of rain in the air and it made this perviously very active butterfly stay completely still for abot 20 mins.
