The report also found that 26 per cent of Canada's estimated 1.4 million small businesses are not vulnerable to Y2K, but that dependence on other businesses could be a weakness.
70% try to prepare, but just one-third of technology ready: survey Dawn Walton The Globe and Mail Monday, June 14, 1999 Close to 70 per cent of Canada's smallest businesses have taken steps to prepare themselves for Y2K, but only about one-third of their technological tools are 100-per-cent compliant, an Industry Canada report suggests. The most common reason cited for about 30 per cent of business not preparing for problems associated with the dreaded bug: It won't affect them. Some small enterprises said year 2000 readiness is not their responsibility and are instead relying on their service providers. Data collected by Decima Research Inc. from interviews with 600 Canadian businesses that have fewer than six employees also found that close to two-thirds of respondents are considering contingency plans such as using paper or buying generators in case of computer chaos. The report, which was released yesterday, suggests companies that are making their systems Y2K compatible tend to be based in cities, have annual revenue of at least $50,000 and use more than three types of technology in their operations. (The majority of respondents use telecommunications systems, personal computers and off-the-shelf software applications.) Retail outlets based in rural areas with annual sales of less than $50,000 are least likely to be taking steps to prepare. But these businesses also tended to use less technology. The report also found that 26 per cent of Canada's estimated 1.4 million small businesses are not vulnerable to Y2K, but that dependence on other businesses could be a weakness. Among companies that may be affected by Y2K, respondents said that about 83 per cent of their technology and systems will be ready by Jan. 1.
