Y2k Team Members...Your Co. Ready?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Since I brought it up in the 6/12/99 thread "Incident in Chicago" I would like to hear from the rest of you y2k remediation team menbers. What state of rediness is your company/organisation/group in? As I said in the above mentioned thread, we will be ready (IMO), but we have ~1500 vendors and I have come to believe they are spooning us due-due when it comes to "y2k compatability". It's a rat NOT leaving a sinking ship because they know someone is in their to plug up the holes (IOW legislation). While I am of the belief that this legislation is necassary, it does give the slackers a hell of a lot of arrugant (sp?) and unwarrented confidence.

Mike, where is everybody? The forum was down for quite awhile, back up, down and up again??? I can almost hear my echo in here.

As far as y2k teams go I'm not part of any, but I do however know sevral people who are. A local railway car company is about finished with it's y2k remediation and now plans on moving into a migration from WANG to COBOL. I know that the y2k remediation took longer than expected but they are almost done confident with the results with testing and implementing...no problems yet. A client access software vendor company is just starting with it's efforts but so far doesn't seem the least skeptical that it can't be done. Also, the companies they work for all seem to be pretty far along with their remediation, several of those which are on the 500 list. I myself have a ways to go... (haven't even started the IPL on my new mainframe). But then again I answer only to myself, so you could say I have a very understanding boss. The current feel for things as far as I can tell is a little resentment for having to put off other projects for y2k but otherwise all quiet on the western front so to speak.

Sorry I meant from WANG to as/400 COBOL, my speciality (yippee lot's of consulting work).

Hi Midwest Mike. My power company will be done testing and remediating mission critical systems in 2 weeks (only a few systems remain; all 300 device types I'm responsible for were complete 2 months ago). And in July, a large number of other power companies will be announcing their readiness. Next month is going to be very interesting in the world of Y2k and power...

I am the "remediation team" for my small non-profit organization. We have two PCs. The 486 I have written off. Checked on other office equipment, only the photocopier and stamp meter are essential and the manufacturer says they are ok. If the fax and telephone go, I won't be interrupted - lol. The fax only sends out anyway. I have an old rotary phone in the actic I can bring in. Checked building heating and the kerosene heater people say both units are ok, but I don't trust them. I don't think they really understand embedded chips and these are programmable. The air conditioning is 40 years old as is the thermostat. I don't think there will be a problem, but we'll get new if there is.

Our software is off the shelf. The accounting software was supposed to have a patch by now, but doesn't. The work-arounds aren't that bad if I have to do that. Microsoft drives me nuts with all their updates, but I dutifully install them. Broderbund, my newsletter software, was compliant last time I looked. The bios are compliant according to the computer manuf. I did get a cheapy tester and it says things are ok.

My ISP says it is compliant.

My biggest problem is that I still use wordperfect 5.1 for all my correspondence. This would seem minor, but I have a decade of heavy legal and historical research in that format. I need to translate it all into microsoft word, but don't know how to write a macro to do so. I have procrastinated from doing it manually file by file. Guess I need to find someone who knows how to do it.

I also need to back up all my stuff on the zip drive, but don't know if that is compliant. Even if I did, they would probably change the status on it the next month after I checked.

Are we ready? No. Who's fault is it? Mine....Don't know if this is typical of small business.
