Where should we have the reunion?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : POPnet Reunion : One Thread

Some good suggestions so far: Lawrence Hall of Science (they do evening rentals) and Heather Farms (we could actually rent out one of their facilities, for a change).

I'm guessing we may have about, I don't know, 50 people or so?

If you like one of these ideas, or you have some good ideas yourself, please share. I'd like to keep the location semi-close to Walnut Creek, since that's where POPnet began, and semi-inexpensive.

I was going to email this, but hell, this is better!

What about the Heather Farms community center right on the little lake, not the reception hall up by the rose garden? Does anybody know how expensive that is? That would be perfect, inside with maybe some food and the doors open to walk out onto the deck area.

Also, what about a "Reunion BBQ" at a park (not necessarily HF..maybe Lafayette Reservoir or Briones). That's certainly cheap...burgers and hotdogs and beer. Just an idea.

As far as the date goes, what are the chances of the Labor Day weekend? Not that I think we should plan around MY SCHEDULE, but without a long weekend for the trek out there, I'm not sure I can make it..day's travel in and day's travel back to my new, steamy, tropical land. Hurricane season has begun!

I also like the idea of a picnic/BBQ. Lafayette reservoir would be good for that. It's also a lot cheaper (and easier to reserve weekend dates) than Heather Farms or Civic Park community center, at about $100 per day (assuming ~50 ppl +/-) instead of $100 per hour. Every public reservable indoor recreational facility in Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek or Concord was at least that much. However, depending on the date, we may not be sure of good weather. So we might need to get an indoor space. Here's some other options I looked up for a BBQ type of thing though:

Heather Farms outdoor picnic area -- $270 (severely booked through September) "Gazebo" or "Peppertree" areas at Rankin Park -- 75 ppl max, $80/day Olive Grove area at Rankin (large) -- $225/day Roger Smith (max 80 ppl) or Pleasant Hill Park Picnic Area -- $160/day I was unable to reach the Laurence Hall of Science. Although probably somewhat expensive, it's probably pretty darned cool. Another option is private commercial warehouse space, which I estimate can be had for between $200-$800 a day. I can do some more research into this if people think it's a good idea.

I can have a BBQ and/or party at my house in Lafayette too, but I think my capacity is about 35 people.

Assuming a BBQ type of thing, food/drinks/supplies will be at least $250. A pot luck or bring-own-drinks or something would be inconvenient for people who have to fly out for the weekend and don't have a lot of time to shop in the area. But I imagine that the people in this area, myself included, can put up dough for food/area rental and split the cost among the attendees the day of the event.

I rather like the idea of (weather permitting) doing a BBQ/picnic/play in the park thing for the morning and afternoon and then taking over a nearby pizza parlor in the evening.

Comments? More suggestions?

When I spoke with someone at the Lawrence Hall of Science, I was told it's $1500 for an evening rental (say a Saturday evening in October). Starts after they close at 5, lasts until 11. You provide your own catering. They leave the exhibits open.

So.. pros: cool place, nice view cons: pricey, restricted time limit

I, too, agree with the BBQ idea. I guess Texas has had some influence on me after all. Someone check and see if there's beef brisket in the grocery stores out there.

As far as location, either HF or Lafayette reservoir would work, although HF would bring back a LOT of memories.. like it's doing right now.. yah, definitely HF (if we decide on the BBQ, anyway)

Wow, you really think 50 people will come? That would be incredible...I thought it would be more like 20, but then again, I am kinda out of touch :)

I like the bbq idea, especially if it is that nice hot summertime weather I remember.

I called Heather Farms, and the cheapest facility they rent (the Rotary room) was $1600. They said they don't reserve picnic areas. Could someone call the Lafayette Resevoir?

By the way, if someone wants to seize control of this task, and just pick a place and date, by all means, please do. I like doing the webpage stuff, but I'd be relieved if someone took over the location duties.

Hmm, well HF does rent out picnic areas but they're booked and not all that great anyhow. In any case the Lafayette Reservoir at $100/day looks like a deal if we plan for a date when it probably won't be raining. Do we agree? Good. :)

I posted a couple of date ideas over in the other question forum so's we can run a few dates by the few people who are participating. If you care what day it's on plz provide your feedback.

Well, -a- possibility would be at my new house in Pleasant Hill. I've got (or will have when escrow closes on Nov 23) some pretty swank digs, with a good sized yard. Even if its a more low-key POPsocial, I'd be for it.

There's also Tilden Park. Not sure what the policy is on reserving spots, but there's several nice large picnic areas.
