In defense of ANITA

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Look folks, I RARELY get actively involved with disputes between people, but for those who have been USING HER HANDLE and saying vile things, would you be so kind as to stop that?

Anita and I have had MANY a violent philosophical discussion on the MSNBC boards. I am a pessimist (not a G&D, just a pessimist), and she feels that things will not be that bad.

She (as am I) is a computer consultant with MANY years experience in the field. I think that on many occaisions, her input can be valuable in keeping a little perspective. I happen to KNOW that she is preparing for about 1-3 months of supply disruptions. I hardly call that a polly.

Once we got past the name-calling (on the other board) I came to have respect for her opinions. I do not necessarily AGREE with many of them, but philsophical discussion is what makes life interesting.

Anita is a REGULAR person, not a "polly wacko lesbian" as people have tried to paint her. Anyway, I just wanted to toss this out for general reading... I appreciate any consideration you might give.

Thanks.

Dennis,

Thanks big boy. Now how about some hot monkey lovin? How do you really know that I am a computer consultant? I could be lyin. Maybe I work at Sears and sell computers. Would that make me a consultant?

Yours forever, Anita

Whoever you are, you are an idiot.

Dennis,

Please remove your lips from my ass. I have gas.

Anita

Dennis -- I have disagreed intensely with her at times (sometimes just lurking), but I agree 100% with your thread. Leave her alone. As far as I'm concerned, the sysop(s) should be looking to delete this kind of crap. It's over the edge.

Big Dog:

Maybe it's just my perspective, but this seems to be the treatment accorded to those who are not members of the club you claim doesn't exist. I've been through it too, and so has Stephen.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), June 10, 1999.

Most of the boards (hockey) that I lurk on show the posters i.p. number beside their names, if that could happen here it would eliminate alot of the problems that go on. I hate to sound cliche, but can't we all get along? Just a thought.

-- SgtSchultz (SgtHansSchultz@Stalag13.com), June 10, 1999.

Flint, you'll notice that (in the weeks I've been here) I have not attacked you personally in any way.

-- Dennis (djolson@pressenter.com), June 10, 1999.

wow- just got on here and saw this thread and thought- whatever did i do now?? But it wasn't me- phew..I'm gonna change my name though- Anita at Hillsidefarm is now just Farmer hillside farm-

-- anita (hillsidefarm@drbs.com), June 10, 1999.

Dennis:

No, I don't believe you have. Nor can I imagine any reason why you would. But I've been here a while, and fought through such treatment, which I think is intended to drive off new people who refuse to read catastrophe into everything whether there's any suport for it or not. I hope Anita Spooner has thick enough skin to stick around and remain thoughtful. After all, look how Andy is reacting to criticism!

Dennis,

Reading this thread made me think of a story. There was a guy walking through the woods one day when he heard a terrible commotion up ahead. He hurried along the path, came to a small clearing, and saw a man fighting with a bobcat. The man was on the ground, rolling around, hollering, and the bobcat was screeching and clawing him to bits. Nearby was an animal cage sitting on the ground. The first guy yelled "hey, buddy, do you need some help catching that bobcat?" The other man managed to say "I'm...not...trying...to...catch...it...I'm...trying...to...let...it.. .GO!" Hmmmm, sound familiar Dennis?

Dennis,

Anita and I have exchanged a couple of e-mails, and she is certainly a very nice person. Unfortunately, I think, alot of times we pigeon hole our opinion of a person's worth based on their standing in the debate on this forum. What a loss for all of us.

Well, till we can stick to debating "facts", I guess the passions of the moment will always lead to personal attacks; been guilty of it myself haven't I Flint? :-)

Would love to see some of our more "optimistic" contributors posting on the preparation threads also instead of falling into defending their postions on the tech threads (long after any similance of commen sense discussion is past). These folks have alot of valuable information to share there too. They may also have questions, but would they have the courage to ask them in the current environment? I am sure we could all learn from the answers.

Dennis:

Thanks (I Think!) As you can see, however, it does no good on this forum. We'll discuss the rest of your post offline...as in WHEN have I ever called anyone a name?

Flint:

I don't think I'm being singled out necessarily, although Y2kPro has experienced this as much as I have. Hoff, a, Andy, and Zoobie have also been "bitten" by this imposter. Those are the ones I've NOTICED.

Sgt:

It certainly would be nice to know to whom we're speaking. As it stands, no one knows who said what.

Lilly:

Good to hear from you again. I've asked a question in a preparation thread, but that thread isn't getting any attention due to the frenzy over c4i (or something like that.) If you know the answer, "How long does a wick in an oil lamp last (# of burning hours)?" I have another question regarding salmon (if you know the answer.) I've always bought RED salmon. Why? Because my mother always bought red salmon. I figured that since she never had a nickel to waste there was a reason why she bought the red over the pink, despite the red costing twice as much. We actually had quite a laugh at the store the other day as we looked at salmon cans. Despite my Norwegian upbringing, I didn't know whether red salmon came from a different region or whether salmon were like chicken and one end had red "meat" and the other end had pink "meat." There's a lot one can learn from the preparedness threads and the gardening threads, whether one sees a 0 or a 10 regarding Y2k.

Bigdog: I feel bad now that my thoughts on a thread upset you. As Dennis can confirm, I've researched Y2k for several years now and continue to research it. I accept NOTHING as truth until I've verified it for myself. I think the biggest issue between the so- called doomers and the so-called pollies is WHERE the information is obtained. I hate to keep blaming my mother for everything, but when I grew up, my mother used to remark, "They say..." My dad would always chime in with, "They WHO?" I guess for this reason, I've always tended to research who does the saying before I believe what they say.

To the imposter:

I understand that school is out for the summer.

Anita, as to the salmon differences...

Red Salmon is embarrassed at being caught.

Pink Salmon isn't, so the catchers smack it around a bit.

:-)

Have a nice weekend all!

-- J (jart5@bellsouth.net), June 11, 1999.

Anita,

There's different breeds of Salmon the same as Tuna. Perhaps your Mom was raised on the red type and just prefers it. One thing for sure, regardless of the nutritional value, any item in short supply versus demand will cost more. Albacore tuna is an example, so is red Salmon.
