$1 Billion Y2K Appeal - Details The state of Michigan has a "rainy day" fund set aside for recessions. This fund consists of $1 BILLION DOLLARS. An appeal has been made to Governor Engler to work with the state legislature to allocate the $1 billion to LOCAL GOVERNMENTS and to the oppressed citizens of Michigan. These funds can be used by both local governments and citizens to prepare appropriately for the oncoming Y2K Disaster.

The majority of local governments in the state of Michigan do not have adequate financial resources to address the Y2K problem. State officials have repeatedly stated that there are too many individuals that do not have the resources to prepare for Y2K; this is why the state is only recommending a 72 hour preparation period for the general public.

The appeal recommended granting the funds in the following manner immediately:

* 50% of the available fund to be granted to all of the counties throughout Michigan based on population size to be used solely for contingency planning and remediation for itself and it's cities, townships, etc. within the county * 50% of the remainder of the funds to be granted to all of the counties based on population size to be used to purchase dry food goods, water purification tablets/filters, first aid kits, blankets and other life sustaining items including medications to be distributed weekly to (priority order) 1. Nursing homes; 2. Children's Hospitals; 3. Mental Health Hospitals; 4. All other individuals who do not have the resources to make adequate preparations for themselves. Each county would have to appoint a buying agent with private citizen group oversight immediately with public hearings conducted weekly to provide the public with an accounting of what was spent.

Those who support this appeal are urged to express their support by calling: Michigan Senate switchboard (517)373-2400 * Michigan House switchboard (517)373-0135 * Governor Engler's office (517)373-3400

If you think Engler will give that request the time of day, I have to say that I think you're living in dream land.
