flint is doing 'well' against milne

"A recent World Bank survey found that no country in Latin America was on schedule for fixing its year 2000 problem, while a recent U.S. Senate study found that Mexico -- considered a year 2000 front-runner in Latin America -- is between 9 and 24 months behind schedule, Budd said. . . ."

"Meanwhile, Mexico was deemed by the speakers to be doing well compared with the other countries in the region."

flint can't figure out what is going on. He is having trouble with what he calls 'sketchy' news. He reads a report that says that Mexico is doing 'well'. What does 'well' mean. He does not care. He just wants to believe that they are doing 'well'. That way he can sleep at night and continue to MINIMIZE the impact of the consequences of Y2K in people's minds, dissuading them from preparing seriously.

It is all a matter of comparison. Mexico is doing 'well' against the outright failures, however they are an outright failure themselves. It is no consolation to say that the man with a bullet in his brain is doing 'well' as oposed to the one with TWO bullets in his brain.

flint just doesn't even HAVE a brain in which to lodge a bullet.

I wish you 'well' flint

Paul, I've never written a word about Latin America or South America. I can easily believe there will be a great deal of noncompliance of all varieties in all these countries. Certainly there's no evidence to indicate otherwise. Nor do I have much confidence in their ability to fix on failure.

The actual impact on the quality of life of the citizens of those countries, as well as on ours indirectly, can't be known in detail, but we can certainly know that it can't be good for anybody.

I know that my pessimism about these countries isn't expressed violently enough to suit you. Too bad.
