Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's Study Finds 94 Percent Of S&P 500 On Track To Y2K Compliance By September...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just thought it might be of some interest to the BB this following link, Bruce Webter's response to Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's Report. I think like he mentions, the real critical date to watch is somehwere in mid-august to see where the industries stand when the 2Q99 10-Q and 10K filings are made. It's tough to wait under these circumstances but what can you reasonably do otherwise?

Waiting two months to read the latest round of unverified, happy-face, replete with a New Deadline, legal mish-mash reports?? I think this brings home what Ed Yourdon said: at this late date, if you are not really convinced of the absolute seriousness of what is about to happen, then you simply will not be.

I guarantee you: the August reports will be optimistic, claiming just a hairs breadth away from being Y2K ready. The reports will be heavily debated -- the Usual Doomer vs Pollyanna stuff. Nothing will have changed really, except for the loss of precious time.

Suppose, just for the sake of argument, that the August reports said something like: Bad news, we won't finish on time, we all are toast. Great, then you -- and everyone else -- decide to prepare, with four whole months to go until January 2000.

The Y2K fence-sitting is a luxury that will not be affordable much longer; it barely is today. Act now if you are going to act. And do it real fast.

Your right Jack, no time like the present. I just meant that we ought to wait until the next and probably final round of reports before we put into motion whatever it is we individually have planned. I think it would be beneficial to get into shooting distance before we shouted "fire" to our front ranks of Y2K GI's. Saves ammunition (energy) and saves the Pollys from distracting the truth with the old "wow what a bunch of depressed, miscontents those Y2K alarmists are". In that it would be much like not breaking radio silence to bicker on which positions are best to occupy. Like you said, if your going to act, act now and sit tight.

(1) Mo bettah we just wait until January 31. We'll have a MUCH better idea who is still up and running...

(2) Hedge your bets NOW, ladies and gentlement, hedge your bets NOW! Before the wheel spins!

And I'm sure that the CEOs of all of those compliant companies will be on airplanes during the rollover because they have so much confidence in the completeness and quality of the repairs. Got Generators!

The guy responsible for that report is very bullish and comes on CNBC occassionally to promote the stock market. I would analyze anything he said very closely. To me, he is a marketing and PR type person.
