Why are you doomers so stupid

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I really don't think you're stupid just hateful (though some of you have very little thought processing going on). You follow the religious meme perfectly. Lisa why would you get upset if I made some suggestions on how to prepare. It would seem to me that suggestions would be helpful no matter from whom they came. And Diane, for someone who claims to believe in angels, you really have a lot of hate in that soul of yours. If I were you I'd get some new angels. There are some of you I respect but the rest of you are losers and look to this forum as "your community" because you have no other. No wonder Ed left you bunch of whiners. You spend so much energy down in the noise, you missed the bigger picture. Yes that's right you have no clue what the big picture is even though you pat yourselves on the back for being so smart.

For the record (and it's in the archives), I'm selling my house and will advertise it as a Y2K compliant house. Yes I'm giving up the wood burning stove, the 500 gallon tank, and the sun room. Oh I forgot I have a gas cook top. Any takers? This is just my way of life, self reliant. I don't depend on anyone except me. I solve problems every day and when 1/1/00 comes, I will continue to solve problems no matter what happens.

I have a ton of camping equipment, not because of Y2K (it's twenty years old) but because I like camping. I know exactly how much food and toilet paper I need to survive two weeks. I've carried it on my back, hiking ten miles a day and packing it out.

I'm building my next house now. I've framed it, and did all the interior including, kitchen cabinets, flooring, bathroom tile, sinks and toilets, firplace (gas), exterior decking, trim, appliances, and of course paint. Contracted out the foundation, stucco, roof, and sheet rock. Though, I do know how (and have done) sheet rock. When I'm done with that I'm making curtains for 13 windows, though for some I'm thinking of just buying some blinds. Instead of sitting around on my butt as most of you doomers and worry about things that might happen, I go and do things.

BTW, old git, if you want to get off your diabetes meds, I know how. It's simple and I've done it.

Unfortunately, I'm working Y2K and will be until 1/3/00, that's how I came to this forum last year. Yes I will be at work on 1/1/00. I'm out of here but I'll be back to roost in August and September.

Well, good morning, sunshine!

25 words or less:

When you ridicule people who perceive the need to prepare skin and finances - then try to buddy up - expect a snarl.

Damned shame you're such a polly, Maria - otherwise I consider you a pretty fine specimen. (plus I'm part Italian, too)

Good Luck - remember the poor and defenseless. Also: close that loan before Q4.

Maria;

It must be hard to carry around that much bitterness and hate.

I think most here would agree that getting spiritually and mentally healthy comes before physical preperations.

Self-reliance is great, but there is one problem you (or any person) won't solve.

And "getting off ... meds", "Its simple and I've done it." only shows the depth of you ignorance or arrogance.

Despite all that, I truly hope you find the help and peace you so obviously need.

Maria - RE: "BTW, old git, if you want to get off your diabetes meds, I know how. It's simple and I've done it."

Would that happen to be related to the Atkins diet and very carefully watching the glycemic index of foods?

Thanks in advance. In case you are wondering, no, nobody in my family has diabetes, it's just another area of interest to me.

Maria,

Though the tone of your posts often causes an immediate rise in my blood pressure, sometimes to dangerously high levels, I nonetheless respect your valuable contributions to the dialogue here. Thank you & be careful finishing up your new home.

Best Wishes,

Best wishes for your busy summer!

I'm starting to think that Maria might just be a dike.

-- Pickles (1653@33.com), June 07, 1999.

Good luck - don't burn out (from the accumulated stress inside) while your working so hard on the exterior .... I respect your background in satellites milspec programming, but reserve the right to be more skeptical than you in the degree of ground support troubles; still, looking forward to getting back in contact when you return.

Maria,

I'd also love to get your take on living with diabetes without insulin. My wife has been insulin dependent since the age of 3. Can you send me an e-mail if you have a moment?

Regarding your post...

I'm going to skip over the first paragraph and the lead in tag. I'm not hateful and I don't hate you.

It's great to know that you are self reliant and able to excel in so many areas. You've also shown that because of your lifestyle you are well prepared for just about anything. That's wonderful. You were already prepared before any preps were necessary.

Now, take yourself outside your own personal comfort zone and put yourself in the body of another person in Anybig City, USA. Though many will have your self reliant spirit and a broad range of skills the majority wont. In fact, many are reliant more on some government provided system than on themselves perhaps due to age, disability, unemployment, etc. in Anybig City, USA. Most are busy with making a living and living the Anybig City lifestyle which is very different from what you live.

I was born, raised and reside in earthquake country. I grew up with them and even enjoyed them up until the Northridge Quake when I thought I was going to die (and I'm quite a distance from the epicenter). Anyway, the point is that most people in this city, no matter how many times they've been told, DO NOT have any emergency preps set aside. Every now and then the ground moves and the great groan whispers, "I'm gonna get some stuff together" but they never actually do it.

Most people in the city don't have a dug well or a place to put a 500 gallon tank. If you've got the money you can bet they have a sun room, an SUV and a big screen TV.

You've shown from your post that you aren't like most people in Anybig City...and they aren't like you. We live two different lifestyles.

Where do you think they'll head to if their comfort zone is decimated or destroyed?

I've always wanted to live in the country...

Maria

Like Mike I live in an earthquake zone that WILL get a level 9+ Eathquake, if not in my lifetime the chances get greater as the generations grow. It will level the town I am in.

They know when the last one happened and the rate in which they happen.

Y2K is a bump.

I also am a border line diabetic.

By the way Maria, you are the one that got mad at me. I never got mad at you. Your the hatefull one, unfortunately you do little but ridicule and pump your self up.....

Good luck Maria

You will need it.

Maria, did your vibrator break last night?

-- A (A@AisA.com), June 07, 1999.

what's with all the homophobia?

-- zoobie (zoobiezoob@yahoo.com), June 07, 1999.

Robert, ground stations do need to be Y2K compliant. I dont know what they are doing to become compliant but the intelsat and inmarsat web sites give a everything is fine report. But I also think that ground stations are easier to fix than the space segments. Of all the satellite systems, telecomm (my opinion) is the least affected by Y2K. I think the more complicated systems will have a more difficult time recovering.

Mike Ive found your posts always thoughtful. I did live in a big city and I can relate to the problems people have in the city. I couldnt tell you where the water treatment plant was in the city, so their solution to possible water shortages is beyond me (but I have a feeling those rivers could get even more sewage). There werent natural disasters in my area but I lived on ethnic lines, in the middle of battle zones. People learn how to cope in different ways. How they will react to possible power outages is anyones guess. But I dont think these poor people will be heading to the country, most have never been outside their neighborhood. I envision more shelters and churches opening their doors to help. Will the city dwellers become more giving and forgiving in a time of need? Maybe, maybe not. (I tend to think that they will). Some people learn from lifes unexpected pleasures and some dont.

Ken, you have it right, if youre referring to the high protein diet. Mike Im not sure about childhood diabetes since its much different than adult onset (the type I have). I used to be a firm believer in the Pritikin lifestyle, that is low fat (10%) and high carbs. A friend convinced me to give this high protein thing a shot. I was very skeptical at first but the results were tremendous. No more meds (I was on glucophage). My husband is completely off his blood pressure meds. Prior to the diet if he missed one, his pressure went up to 180/140. The theory is that the current pyramid is up side down. Carbs cause most health problems. People should consume more protein; fat doesnt matter. I found it difficult to change my Pritikin way of thinking but now I eat bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburgers (without the bun) or sausage for lunch, and some kind of fish for dinner with a few veggies. I occasionally eat more carbs but thats OK as long as I continue to consume the protein. There are also a ton of protein powders on the market for those possible Y2K problems.

Brain, sorry bout that but you got caught in the cross fire of the Ed left us flames. Didnt you just ask me about iridium LEOs?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), June 07, 1999.

Maria, you better back off with the anti-carb rhetoric. Do you have any idea how many jobs hang in the balance? Think Coca-Cola. Think beer and wine. Think pasta, bread and candy manufacturers. Think rice farmers. Think potato chips. Think restaurants. Take these down, and fractional reserve banking goes with it!

Do you realize you are going to single-handedly trash 35% of the nation's GDP if anybody listens to you? You are a menace and need to be silenced before you cause any more harm.

(Lisa, low-carber for almost a year, size 13 -> 9, loves guzzling brisket with grease & fat. The only way to go.)

-- Lisa (lisa@work.now), June 07, 1999.

Lisa - Cute one! I'm reminded of the Hymulka cartoon, first two frames were social security bureaucrats licking their chops over the proposed S.S. dedicated tobacco tax, third frame one of them says "what about the anti-smoking campaign?", fourth frame is two smokers , one saying, "What's with this new warning?", "WARNING: quitting smoking can be hazardous to your fiscal health."

Maria - yes, no to low carbs, all the protein and fat you want. On those carbs you do eat, are you familiar with the glycemic index of various foods? Two foods can have the identical calorie count (carbo gms.) but affect your blood sugar levels radically differently. Anybody that researchs gylcemic indexes on the Internet PLEASE be aware that there are several totally bogus gylcemic indexes out there that use bread as the 100= basis! The correct indexes uses glucose as 100= basis.

-- Ken Seger (kenseger@EARTHLINK.NET), June 07, 1999.

I phrased that remarkably poorly. By "no to low carbs" I should have said "zero to low carbs".

-- Ken Seger (kenseger@EARTHLINK.NET), June 07, 1999.

Maria, Why are you using a 'fake email address'? Is that not against this forum's policy? If it is good enough to say than it should be good enough to stand behind. Time for you to take off your mask and 'be someone'.

-- Barry Jaynes (barryjaynes@usenvitech.com), June 07, 1999.

zoob,

"homophobia" (if it were a real word) would mean "fear of sameness". I'm guessing that's not what you meant.

-- Stop Destroying (theenglish@language.please), June 07, 1999.

SD - I have a friend that loves to chide me when I abuse words. Some of his favorites are "cresent wrench" "skill saw" "channel locks" and other propriatary brand names. His latest is wood stove, "A stove made out of wood eh? Guess it saves on buying fuel!".

-- Ken Seger (kenseger@earthlink.net), June 07, 1999.

Maria

Yup I am interested in it! Heard that it is not going to be fully operational till 2002 yet have heard that the governments can use it. More curiosity that it may be forwarded in its full use.
