I don't think there will be enough people convinced to take their money out as hype would have us believe. If power goes down (which we now know will not happen) then places to spend money will not be able to open. With power, then checks can be checked (over phone lines to credit lines) and debit cards also can be used as well as credit cards. Considering the 1st is a holiday, most people will not be working and banks will not be open anyway so they will have time to check and make sure the banks are not having problems and fix any they find, or if a problem cannot be fixed then the congency plans can be set into action.

I think the idea of bank runs are being used by people who prefer to fear the worse or as a blurb to get peoples attention for Y2K stories in the media. They need something to grab the public's attention now that it is known that planes will not fall out of the sky, cars will not stop dead in the middle of the freeway and elevators will not fall 13 floors to crash in the basement.

Most people I talk to say they usually don't have much money left in the back after shopping for christmas anyway.

> > Is it possible that Gary 'the boy who cried wolf' North is winning in his > effort to convert the (ignorant) masses to the dark side?

Gary has discreated himself to the point where even the people who are preparing for 6 months consider him a joke.

What happens is when fresh fish (Newly Y2K awakened people) start searching the internet to see what is going on, they run up against Gary North and other doomer sites and vender sites speaking of worse case scenerios (unless their product is bought) rather than unbiased middle of the road sites telling of what has been proven to have no problems and where problems have been found and fixed or on their way to be fixed. Also a lot of OLD information has been left on sites about all of the "possible" problems that can happen (which have since been disproven).

How many people will start searching the net tomorrow and see all the misinformation that has been left up on websites? Also there are "news" providers who's sole purpose is to report only bad news, even if that bad news is speculation, so their "advertisers" have an audience for their Y2K prep wares? And of course there are some people who bring up the same "problems" over and over and doubt the truth from any enity giving good news, and will continue to haunt the mail lists and forums with their opinions, a lot on subjects they have no experience in, until the very end. There are too many people who are getting the truth out as to what has been done and is getting done for these newbies to be conned into believing the worse for long. Newbies are now learning what they can do to prepare for the amount of time they feel they need to, usually acording to where they live. It is no longer "No one knows what will happen" ~ we are getting a pretty "good idea of knowing what will happen"~ such as the power grids will not go down, cars will run, plane will fly, trains will run, building management systems will work correctly, hospitals will function safely, ATM's will give you your money, and you will have your usual Jan first hangover. > > Just because I'm a lemming, I don't have to go cliff diving. (Do I?) > > Phil Don't worry Phil, the worse is over, no stone has been left unturned, a lot of hard work has gone into getting most things well on the way of being just fine come new years day. There will be problems, areas that have been overlooked but they will not amount to much and should be handled by the contingency plans in making right now. Cherri --

LOL

I too am hearing lots of good news about Y2K. Used to be a sheeple of North and Yourdon and have planned for about a 2 on the Y2k scale.

Be prepared but dont have a cow about it.

Cherri,

I get the feeling that you were looking in the mirror, talking to yourself, and had the tape recorder running. After listening to the tape, you felt so much better to hear someone saying all those things that you transcribed it and posted it. Is that how this happened?

I don't hold gary north's interpretation of christianity against him any more than I would any christian.all he's really said is that he doesn't see any reason why he should believe the grid won't crash, your reason that nothing bad will happen because you don't want anything bad to happen.that's what you're doing when you accept the word of an "expert" telling you to not bother making personel preparations.the grid is still an uncertian thing, the "experts" have merely become "hopeful"

Just between you and I and the lamp post (C.S. Lewis) we are planning on taking over and defusing the timeBomb.

These pollys want the worst case scenario to happen. They try to incite panic and fear in people and hope for the worst while preparing for the best.

Will Continue,

That was brilliant. Imagine a TV spot being done by some honest public informants that showed Cherri sitting there talking to herself in the way she did, and then using that video as both a Y2k alert *and* an anti-drug message. Two messages for the price of one! :-)

No offense Cherri and, I don't consider you a troller but we could make the worlds largest flower garden with all the roses you just chucked at us.

Maybe you could reconsider?

Cherri,

You are right on target. The doomers are terribly upset that the world is not going to end and they will find bad news in any report.

Look at the water thread above for an illustration of ignorance run amuck. Obviously, no one with any knowledge of water produciton and distribution contributed to that goofy dialogue. You would have to be a complete idiot to read bad news into the compliance statement that initiated that thread.

Yourdon bailed out on these clowns and they can't accept the fact that he did it so he could once again repair his credibility after making a lot of money promoting a false prophecy. His punditry career will survive this phony, trumped up scare story just as it survived the prediction several years ago that the American programmers would become extinct.

"a", have you ever heard of Jerry Clowers. He once told a high falootin lady something which also applies to you. Jerry said with his fantastic Mississippi red-neck drawl: "Mam, it's very obvious to me that you have been educated beyond the level of yer intelligence!"

Will continue, your every utterance is a profundity unto itself. I really appreciated the comment you made on the water thread above where you told us that this is June, 1999. I don't know how I could have survived the day without that revelation.
