Five Governors Enter Regional Y2K Compact

June 3, 1999

Governors of five states announced their intent to share Year 2000 resources and information under a series of "cross-licensing agreements" that will allow states to swap materials and coordinate efforts to prepare the public for the millennial date change. The governors of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware declared a new joint Year 2000 "proclamation," which grew out of interstate collaboration discussed at a recent meeting of utility and telecommunications regulatory officials of nine states. State officials want to see states sharing videos, brochures, workbooks and other materials developed to brief and prepare the public for possible fallout from the Year 2000 date change.

"The spirit of the proclamation is to encourage states to think regionally and not just statewide in preparing for Y2K," said Scott Elliott, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Information Technology. "There is no sense in each of our states replicating the same Y2K preparedness work when we can save time and resources by working together."

Apologies for the unintended double post... see DJSquire post at

... Although I'd still like to see the "hard copy" text! Check on what the reporter ( Jennifer Jones ) or editors ( filters ) left out.

Robert,

Did you hear my state, (Pa) is now 98% compliant, (their definition)?

On the surface it sounds like a good idea, but doesn't it make the job 4 times larger than it has to be.

Rick...who knows where 3 mile island, and peachbottom is.

Rick:

Of course it makes the situation more complicated! That's the way political "CYA" works. ( Silly! *wink* )

Never mind that the U.S. Navy testified before the U.S. Senate that "99% isn't good enough." What do _they_ know!

Oh ye of little faith...

Question: Are these states banding together to block the bridges to adjoining states with major urban centers and federal districts not part of their group? New York/New York City, Maryland/Baltimore and DC come to mind...

Wildweasel:

Good question! That's why it would be _helpful_ to see the hardcopy of this so-called "proclamation"... what is the "spirit" ( and letter! ) of Y2K preparations. Is it a "Pandora's Box?"...

Nothing wrong with healthy skepticism--ESPECIALLY IN REGARDS TO POLITICIANS AND THEIR MILITARY!
