This thing has been up there for months. Somebody in Y2K risk management is Y2K aware, but can't get the attention of the county government politicians. I talked to my supervisor 18 months ago without results. I can't wait for an election to throw all of their butts out.

Noel,

I take it that you live in Fairfax County. Howdy neighbor! Will we be seeing you at the next Yourdonite get together?

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

Doesn't Paul Milne live in Fairfax county also? Not that he's likely to care much if the place is ready or not.

Nope, I live in HALIFAX County. Hours and hours and hours from there.

Look on a map. I am in the very northwest corner of Halifax on the Pittsylvania/Campbell county line.

Excerpt from article: "Due to this REMOTE possibility...The Risk Management Division is taking y2k preparedness SERIOUSLY."

Two totally contradictory statements, yet pervasive in all media and government articles. I've never seen more fence riding, have-my-cake- and-eat-it-too B.S. in my entire life!

Interesting action list...too bad they won't say how much & for how long. "Non-perishable food" is one such item...however, common sense dictates that since most folks have 1-2 weeks non-perishables in their homes already, why do we need more? Best I've read so far, it's being quantified as a hurricane (i.e. 3-5 day speed bump).

READ between the lines, folks!

Stan,

Yes I'm a Fairfaxer. Unfortunately, I spend all week up in Canada working Government of Canada Mission Critical Systems issues. I'd love to go, but my wife has made it clear that she wants a little of my time.

Here's the status of Fairfax County, as best I can determine: * They have been working on the IT for some time * In the schools, they are testing PCs * Saw a reference to replacing the 911 system * They've seen the references to Montgomery county testing their traffic lights, given how competitive the counties are, they will probably work on the lights. Expect lights to NOT be well synchronized. * No indication they are working on water at FCPWA. * Sanitation is replacing some control systems before 2000. Not talking about what or why. * If power and telecoms stay up (I have no faith in organizqations which are "spinning" and that is what VA power is doing) Fairfax should be livable.

If this is the status on the second wealthiest county in America, which is loaded with technologists trying to force the government to deal with the problem, I fear for America.

Noel

P.S And 7 years ago I thought this would be an interesting problem to work on developing solutions to.... NPG

What can I say? I lived in Fairfax until 2 months ago -- I now live in a very rural farm in Northwest Arkansas. (For what it is worth, unless things have changed, selling my suburban home during the s-l-o-w Winter season was quite doable, I suspect that they can be sold like gangbusters now.)

-- Jack (jsprat@eld.net), June 01, 1999.

Hurray! I have been wishing to find some GI's in Fairfax County, and to get together with them, perhaps, to discuss how we all are going to survive here, right next to DC, and with the Fairfax County's Police "Gangbusters" Unit having a full-time job right now controlling the 80 gangs with 800 members on their database, including problems across the street from me in subsidized housing. I'd bug out to a nice rural area where there are survivalists and sell my condo to do so in a flash, but that isn't possible for me financially right now, and I am stuck here. (And with Clinton's big New Year's Eve 3-day $10-mil bash in DC further cause for concern, if the lights go out and the panicking celebrators pour through our suburbs, this is almost too much to contemplate. Anyone out there want to get a group together to discuss? I've tried my neighbors, but they are in denial and say that for us to meet and pool our resources would "be too scarey!" (Believe it or not...but I'm going to try again later...just now I'm busy trying to inform those in my sphere who DO want survival preparation information, and trying on my own at age 63 to prepare belatedly these past few months, after finally landing a job so I could.) Looking forward to hearing from some of you....

Noel -

And it certainly has been (and continues to be) "interesting", in the Chinese sense of that word. I only hope it doesn't become "extremely interesting"...

-- Mac (sneak@lurk.hid), June 25, 1999.

That was my thought also - if this is as good as one of the wealthiest counties can do, one of the counties with most highly educated populations anywhere (course that might answer the question!) - what will the rest do?
