Finally!

A group of the Silicon Valley DGIs are starting to wake up!

Im on a listserv of a typical Silicon Valley group that holds luncheon meetings every couple weeks with speakers from all over the spectrum... SETI, NASA... you name it, they present it.

One of the DWGIs sent this around...

The results are in and now it's definite:

WE HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AS FAR AS Y2K IS CONCERNED.

Early in April, because of the hullabaloo about Y2K, I asked members of ____ to make their predictions about what dire things will happen on 01/01/00, or later, that can be attributed to The Y2K problem. These might give some rationale for the stockpiling of guns, food, medicines and the calling out of the National Guard and god knows what other actions. I assumed I would get some input from ____ members because there has been a large amount of doomsday talk mostly in the form of how many people, or institutions, are worried to distraction.

There were __ responses. Only __ of them dealt at all with predictions and these were not earthshaking: ____ suggested that some drugs from Europe might be delayed and that some critical parts from Japan might also be delayed. ( ____ INTEL spokesman, voiced the same prediction in respect to computer parts.) ____ sent in two messages but I was disappointed that there were no predictions from him.

Based on the responses, I repeat:

THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AS FAR AS Y2K IS CONCERNED!

*Sigh*

So, this *person* with a little help, has now sparked a bunch of people sharing the latest Y2K news, and even brought someone out of the woodwork from Stanford University.

At, any rate, some are now requesting preparation & supply links.

Have you noticed how the DGIs seem to get it after the fact, but never seem to be able to put it all together? You know, "OK, maybe {insert latest generally acknowledged problem} may happen, but blah blah OK blah blah fix in time." I too live in the Silicon valley and am amazed and appalled generally and particularly by the lack of coverage or only snide coverage by the SF Chronicle and Examiner. I can only attribute it to what's at stake. In the case of the newspapers, that would be ad revenue, and in the case of the many IT industries here, that would be their very existence. Is anyone else surprised about how little heat Microsoft and Intel, for instance, is taking on their PATHETIC handling of this whole mess?

In spite of all of the good lists out there (and some good ones were listed above), your situation is quite different than that of others. Therefore, you can only use lists as a guideline in developing your own, personalized list.

Consider:

Here... I don't need heating...but fuel will be in short supply with even a minor distruption. Most food is imported by sea. I stockpile coconuts to feed the chickens. Sugar, water, and coffee will probably not be a problem, since we grow them here.

Your situation in an area where almost all water is imported for long distances, in a large urban area, requires a different set of preparations... Your personal situation (single or married, in good or ill health, lack of mobility due to job/career, lifestyle, etc.) must all be taken into account. It's a lot more work, but will yield a more successful and comfortable survival.

Hi Gayla, good to see you--you're right, the RM survival group has great practical information. I really like the info about thermos cooking, sort of a low-tech slow-cooker. (Basically, put rice or whatever and boiling water in thermos, let sit several hours or overnight, details at site.)

Old Git, that's a little bit like what I do with pasta. Boil water, add pasta, cover the pot and let it sit for exactly 20 minutes. The pasta is always done perfectly. This works for any type of pasta, too, from orzo to rigatoni.
